With Sam Atkin, Georgina Adam, and Abbie Donnelly all invited but declining or not starting, it was left to Evie Brooks, Mollie Grant, and Mabel Akande to represent Lincoln Wellington at this weekend’s British Track & Field Championships in Birmingham.
Mollie debuted her British Champs indoors earlier in the year, and added an outdoor debut to her CV yesterday in a difficult 800m heat. The 17-year-old was up against the likes of Izzy Boffey and Lucy Armitage, both expected, and duly delivered, on bringing home medals. Mollie ran 2:05.91 for fourth place, and gained valuable experience from another great competition. Mollie debuted the British Indoor Champs earlier in the year and in both competitions so far has lined up on the lane inside two of the three fastest 800m women in the country at any level.
Next up was Evie Brooks, who featured in a stacked field of 1500m women. Revee Walcott-Nolan, Ava Lloyd, Mollie Hudson, Erin Wallace, Beth Ansell, Katie Pye, Sophie Tooley, amongst others, we’re all vying for the top 6 spots to qualify for the final. Our Wingate University scholar has raced back in the UK since returning for the summer and the NCAA regional team winner put in a sterling effort to run 4:23.36, only one place behind Olympian Walcott-Nolan and one position away from qualifying for the final. A great debut at the British Champs from Evie!
Finally, it was the turn of Mabel Akande in the 100m. Mabel bypassed the heats due to her current UK ranking and began her competition in the semi-final, lining up against fellow Lincolnshire sprinter Amy Hunt. In a tricky draw, both qualified safely for the final later in the day. In said final, which featured an immensely strong field, Mabel came from behind to take a bronze medal behind Amy Hunt and Dina Asher-Smith. She produced a PB of 11.18s to extend her UK U23 leading time. This is Mabel’s second bronze at a UK Champs, having taken the 60m (i) bronze two years ago as a 17-year-old.
Congratulations to this trio on the country’s biggest stage!
