Beverley 5k Classic
Beverley
16 July 2010

Four Lincoln Wellington athletes featured prominently at an evening of prestigious sporting entertainment in Beverley on Friday for the 5k Classic Town Centre Road Race which was held prior to the British Cycling National Circuit Championships.

An inspirational performance by Lincoln Wellington athlete Matt Bowser on this 4-lap traffic free course saw him take victory in a time of 14m 34s - the 2nd fastest time on the course with only Peter Riley, who clocked 14m 28s last year, having been quicker.  Chasing all the way to earn a highly deserved second place in 14m 58s was club-mate Sam Atkin, who can be regarded as the most exciting male athlete to emerge from North East Lincolnshire in many a year, finishing in 14m 58s, almost a minute clear of third place.  A great battle developed for 5th place between the ever popular club member Les Ball and Scarborough athlete Mark Collins.  Despite a determined last lap, it was the Scarborough AC athlete who clinched 5th place with Les in sixth in 16m 32s, his fastest 5k time this year.

The ladies race saw Lincoln Wellington's Harriet Canter compete in her third 5k within a week, having already run the the quality races of the Pennine Lancashire 5k and the Doncaster 5k, where she claimed third place behind the Rotherham Harriers Jenny Blizard and Natalie Grant.  On the night, Harriet had to settle again for third place in 18m 28s an improvement on her time when she last competed on the course in 2008, with Blizard again taking the win.
