English Schools T&F Championships
Birmingham
9-10 July 2010

Lincoln Wellington's Joe Dunderdale is the new English Schools Senior Boys Javelin champion.  Competing in front of a big crowd in Birmingham's Alexander Stadium did not faze him in the slightest and, after taking an early lead in the competition and then slipping back to 3rd place, he produced a sizzling personal best throw of 62.60m to see off some highly rated opposition and clinch a superb gold medal.  The English Schools Championships has been the breeding ground for many past and present senior stars of track and field in this country and this success could hopefully be the launch pad to point the Wellington youngster's athletic career along the route to elite level competition.

The Senior Boys 3000m had one of the classiest entries for that event in recent years with eight of the line up having a personal best time of 8m 31s or below.  Wellington's Sam Atkin tried to run it from the front but could never get clear and was reeled in with two laps to go.  He stuck on well to the finish to take a very creditable 4th place in 8m 33.11s and, all being well, will be back in the same event next year for another medal shot.  In the Junior Girls 1500m, a very well paced run by Emma Tonner in her heat gave her 3rd place in a fine personal best time of 4m 41.73s.  She was probably still feeling the effects of that race in the following day's final and just lacking a bit of zip she finished in 10th place in 4m 45.65s.  Multi-eventer Hannah Dunderdale has had a very good season so far, but the 300m Hurdles is very much a specialist event and she was just a little outpaced in her heat and finished in 6th place in 47.20s which was not sufficient to take her into the final.  In the Senior Girls 3000m, Georgia Ball was inside her personal best time after four laps but a debilitating attack of stitch slowed her dramatically over the last couple of laps and she crossed the line in 10th place in a time of 10m 57.72s.

There were two very good field performances from the Wellington athletes at the championships.  Sarah Stanhope produced an excellent throw of 43.02m to pick up 5th place in the Intermediate Girls Hammer competition.  And a terrific effort from Matt Houlden to record 14.14m in the Senior Boys Triple Jump gave him 10th place in a contest of the highest class.
