English Schools T&F Championships Birmingham 9-10 July 2010 |
|
Lincoln Wellington Athletic Club's young athlete development policy has reached a new level of success.
Eight young athletes from the club – a record number in one year - have received official notice of selection by their respective county teams to compete at this year's English Schools Track & Field Championships at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. The meeting will take place on July 9th and 10th and entry standards are notoriously tough with many talented athletes falling just short of selection every year for this prestigious event. Joe Dunderdale will be the Wellington flagbearer in the Senior Boy's Javelin competition. His personal best 62.13m puts him in 4th place in the current rankings and right in among the medal contenders. Sarah Stanhope will also be a strong contender in the Intermediate Girl's Hammer with personal best of 44.26m. Also competing in the Hammer will be Dominic Sykes, who takes a personal best of 53.86m into the Intermediate Boy's contest. Multi-eventer Matt Houlden competes in his strongest event - Triple Jump – and, if a current minor injury problem does not inhibit him, then his best of 14.5m will be very competitive. Middle distance athlete Emma Tonner has had an excellent season so far and, with competitive racing assured, she could easily make big inroads into her 1500m best of 4m 45.2s in the Junior Girl's event. Georgia Ball also represents the Wellington middle distance group in the Senior Girl's 3000m. In what is sure to be a very high class event, her recent personal best of 10m 11.5s will ensure that she races prominently but will probably need another leap forward to get her into the medals. Hannah Dunderdale has been another of the club's successful multi-eventers. She will compete at this meeting in the Intermediate Girl's 300m Hurdles. And, although her best of 46.4s only places her 20th in the rankings, she could easily re-write this with only one event to worry about. All of the above seven will represent Lincolnshire Schools at the Championships. The club's eighth athlete, Sam Atkin, representing the Humberside team. A recent gold medal in the North of England U20 5000m championships proved he is in good shape and, if he can get close to his recent personal best of 8m 20s in the Senior Boy's 3000m, he should be very competitive. |
