Northern T&F Championships
Sport City, Manchester
12-13 June 2010

Two excellent days of competition at the North of England Track and Field Championships at Sport City Manchester produced some outstanding performances and a very creditable six medal haul for the athletes of Lincoln Wellington.

The highlight of the first day came in the U20 Men's 2000m Steeplechase.  Shane Robinson and Stuart Campbell kept close company at the head of the field right from the gun and, turning for home for the final time, it was clear that the pair had the race between them.  It was Robinson's slightly stronger finish that prevailed with a gold medal winning time of 6m 10.69s.  Campbell was not far behind in 6m 14.63s to pick up the silver medal and give Wellington a superb 1-2 in the race.  There was another Wellington medal in the U20 Women's 1500m final, which featured three athletes from the club.  Lara Thomas ran a very positive race and, although just outpaced in the closing stages, she kept going well to hold on to the silver medal position in a big personal best time of 4m 34.01s.  Rochelle Harrison also took a big chunk off her previous best with 4m 41.25s for 5th place and Georgia Ball produced a sound performance for 7th place in 4m 46.46s.  A bronze medal went to Lydia Chamberlin with a leap of 5.57m in the Senior Women's Long Jump.  Lydia also picked up 4th place in the Senior Women's 100m Hurdles in 15.76s.  A fifth medal on the first day went to Joe Dunderdale, whose excellent throw of 62.13m in the U20 Men's Javelin gave him the runner-up spot in a high class contest.  In the Senior Men's 5000m, Ian Kimpton ran strongly throughout to take a very creditable 5th place in the field of 17 starters with a good time of 14m 56.22s.  And Sophie Cowper was 12th in the Senior Women's 1500m in 5m 08.55s.

The second day of the championship was notable for a terrific piece of front running by Sam Atkin to take gold in the U20 Men's 5000m.  Not satisfied with the early pace, he took up the running after 700m and was not subsequently headed.  He was a long way clear at the line in a massive personal best time of 14m 53.76s.  Lucinda Pitcher took 8th place in the Senior Women's 5000m in 18m 17.6s and Sophie Cowper made her second appearance of the championships to finish one place further back in 18m 47.0s.  A clearance of 2.20m in the Pole Vault gave Hayley Fox 6th place.
