East Hull 20 Hull 28 March 2010 |
|
20 miles is a long way to run and that might explain why 2 Wellington runners never made it to the start line today! The 4 that did run the race tried very hard to come up with their own unique excuses as to why they should not run, but, in the end, the need for a good long run to prepare for the London Marathon took over and so we lined up at the start line. The East Hull 20 is not known for its hills; in fact it is boringly flat. Today though it had a much more subtle substitute – the dreaded strong head wind! All seemed OK up to the 9 mile mark and then we turned that dreaded corner! Cue the hilarious sight of runners doing an impression of skiers when they leave the jumping ramp! You get the picture don’t you? To run into this wind you literally had to lean forward at 45 degrees! This lasted for 2 miles and really took it out of most runners on the day (judging by the majority of the comments at the end of the race anyway!). There was also a further 2 miles of head winds and a stony track towards the end to really finish your legs off and diminish any stamina you may have saved for the finish.
Despite the conditions we produced the following results:- Paul Samways was an excellent 34th in 2h 15m 54s, Peter Duncan and Glenn Moore were 78th and 79th in times of 2h 23m 25s and 2h 23m 27s respectfully (thanks Pete for running with me at such a slow pace, I know you found it painfully boring!) and finally Dave Smith was 346th in a time of 3h 21m 10s. We didn’t take away any prizes today but we all took away a great deal of pride knowing that we had tackled 20 miles in very windy conditions and were probably now better prepared for running the 26.2 miles at London. My final thought for the day is this - give me hills anytime, as opposed to wind, because you know where they are and exactly how long they will last! |
