Kilomathon
Nottingham/Derby
14 March 2010

The date is 14th March 2010 and this day will forever go down in road running history as the day the first ever Kilomathon in the World took place!  This ‘Metric Marathon’ (26.2 km or 16.6 miles) is an interesting addition to the already established list of races that are perfect training runs for those athletes that are training for a Spring Marathon.  The route went from Nottingham to Derby via a slightly up hill course with a few interesting terrains along the way.  Eight pioneering Lincoln Wellington road runners braved an early start and made their way to the start line, via complicated arrangements similar to the organisation of the Great North Run.

There were more than 4000 runners who completed the course and here is how the Wellington Runners performed.  First in was Glenn Moore in an excellent 160th place and a time of 1h 54m 24s.  Second in was Andy Grimwood in 513th place and a time of 2h 05m 09s followed (not too closely this time Andy!) by Netty Wasyliw in 686th place and a time of 2h 07m 55s.  Deb Daly was next in 1010th place and a time of 2h 13m 00s followed by Steve Bullivant in 1425th place and a time of 2h 18m 24s.  Steve had rested an ankle injury all week and this came back to haunt him about half way through today’s race and prevented him from getting a better time.  Jane Ramsden’s training has been blighted by illness recently so she should be very pleased with her 1627th place and time of 2h 21m 21s.  Natalie Ling is a relatively new member of the club and her 2639th place and time of 2h 34m 46s were excellent encouragement for the future.  Last in was Dave Smith in 3095th place and a time of 2h 43m 07s.  Dave had a recurrence of his niggling foot injury today which forced him to run and walk part of the second half of the race.  If it wasn’t for that he would have got a better time.

This was an excellent event overall with a varied and interesting course.  I think we might do this one again next year, even if we are not training for a Marathon.  Perhaps the Kilomathon will become the new run for those that don’t want the pain of a full Marathon!  Once again, a massive well done to all Lincoln Wellington road runners, I hope the blisters and injuries are soon better!
