The savage hills of Blackburn's Witton Park could not prevent a day of outstanding performances from the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad at the North of England
Cross Country Championships. In race after race, Wellington athletes were in the thick of the action and there were three sets of team medals and an individual title to show for their efforts at the end of the meeting.
The U17 Men's squad had high hopes of retaining the team trophy which they won at last
year's event and duly did so in some style. Despite missing the whole summer due to a foot problem, Sam Atkin has got back into good shape and a well paced run saw him improve by one place on last
year's runner-up spot to take the gold medal and the North of England title.
Nathan Page in 16th place, Ronnie Wilson 25th and Ian Maplethorpe 41st all ran very well to complete the trophy winning quartet with Matt Bee (80th) and Ryan Stevenson 92nd backing these four up.
The U20 Women also looked set for team gold at halfway in their event, but a few minor changes in positions in the closing stages meant they had to settle for silver – just three points away from gold but still an excellent result.
Lara Thomas led the squad back with a strong run for 8th place with Georgia Ball looking more like her old self in 13th and Rochelle Harrison 14th.
Sophie Cowper retained 19th place all the way round to clinch the medals and Holly Haywood completed the squad in 36th.
Fine running form the U17 Women's team also produced a set of silver team medals.
Libbie Read and Sheridan McWilliam were close together at the line in 14th and 15th places with Laura Donnelly 26th and Gemma Selwood, with her best run for the club, taking 41st place.
Hester Talbot was a little further back in 59th position. In a
Senior Men's race with over 600 starters, Matt Bowser was always chasing the leading trio and eventually finished a very good 6th.
Tom Doe improved throughout the race to take 9th place and Ian Kimpton made late headway into 42nd spot.
A flying finish gave Les Ball his target top 100 placing when he crossed the line 96th.
There were two excellent performances from the U15 Girls with Bo Haywood just out of the medals in 5th place and Emma Tonner not far away in 13th.
Harriet Canter was the only senior women representing Wellington, and a determined effort saw her back in 30th place from a field of well over 200 finishers.
Abbie Donnelly did very well to finish 9th in the U13 Girl's contest with
Rebekah Ward 35th and Clara Temple 134th. The U13 Boys just missed the medals but did very well to finish 4th team.
Declan Dickinson was first back in 41st place closely followed by Alex Humberstone 49th.
Joe Shuttleworth 62nd, Billy Onians (94th) and Michael Harper (139th) completed the squad.
A big Wellington U15 Boys team was led in by Richard Brine in 50th spot with Haran Dunderdale 51st and Dylan
Love 54th. Sam Shuttleworth took 60th place and Sam Chapman 83rd, Harry Baxter 151st and Anthony Read 173rd completed some very promising performances.
There were only two athletes from Wellington in the U20 Men's race with Chris Woodger taking 54th place and Paul Samways finishing 69th.
