Senior National Road Relays Sutton Park 17 October 2009 |
|
The Lincoln Wellington endurance athletes came through their first major test of the winter season with some fine performances at the National Road Relays round the undulating circuit of Sutton Park, Birmingham. Tom Doe led the senior men's team off and after a ferocious pace throughout the first leg he was very satisfied to record a personal best time of 17m 34s for the 5.6k circuit and hand over in 18th place. A solid effort from Ian Kimpton on leg two saw him back in 18m 11s for 24th place before Matt Bowser picked up nine places on the 3rd lap to cross the line 15th in 17m 45s. Tom Straw conceded just five places on leg four and a creditable time of 19m 02s saw him hand over in 20th place. Despite not being in his best form Shane Robinson kept going in determined fashion on leg five to finish 30th in 19m 56s before a good final lap from Will Strangeway in 18m 22s placed the club 25th at the finish - the best performance by Wellington's men's team in this event - and an excellent result against the cream of British endurance running. Lucinda Pitcher took on her familiar first leg role for the senior women and returned 41st in 15m 55s after another relentless cavalry charge. Harriet Canter scythed through the field on leg two and a personal best 15m 42s for the 4.4k circuit improved the club by 15 places to 26th. Rebecca Rowley was promoted to the A team at the last moment due to late withdrawals and toughed it out well to finish in 40th place with a time of 18m 44s. The anchor leg went to Rochelle Harrison and a very good effort from the 800m specialist saw her home in 16m 24s for 35th place - a very respectable performance with several of the original A team missing. The withdrawals meant that the B team was incomplete but Susie Ardron (18m 17s) and Holly Haywood (18m 46s) did well on the first two legs before a very promising run from new member Sophie Cowper in 16m 27s on the third and final leg brought the B squad through to 58th at the finish. |
