North Midlands XC League Match 1 - Derby 10 October 2009 |
|
A small contingent of Lincoln Wellington athletes competed in the first North Midlands cross country league meeting of the season held on Saturday at Markeaton Park in Derby. With glorious spells of warm autumn sunshine and excellent conditions underfoot the stage was set for some terrific performances.
First race of the day was the combined U13 Boys and U15 Girls over 3.3km of the slightly undulating course that features some tricky climbs and descents near the end of each lap. Emma Tonner was always to the fore and went on to complete a fine victory in a time of 12m 05s, (a remarkable run considering that she had travelled straight from competing in a netball match in Nottingham a couple of hours earlier) with Bo Haywood coming across the line 6th in 12m 27s to place the team 3rd overall with 43 athletes having finished. The U17 Women ran with the U15 Boys, covering one full lap and a small loop totalling around 4.5km. Laura Donnelly made a very quick start then dropped back slightly during the middle half of the race. Recovering well, she crossed the line in 5th position in a time of 17m 04s. There was a very promising club debut for new member Sophie Cowper in the U20/Senior Womens race of 6.5km held over 2 laps of the course. Sophie was always with the leading group as the field spread out, finishing strongly she placed 4th (but first U20 athlete) behind a resurgent Sian Edwards of Kettering and GB in a time of 24m 56s. In the final race of the day for U13 Girls, Abbie Donnelly, perhaps inspired by the runs of her team-mates, stormed round to an excellent 2nd place in 10m 49s. Next on the agenda for the club's athletes are the National Road Relays in Sutton Park this coming weekend. |
