Northern T&F Plate Final
Stretford
12 September 2009

The Lincoln Wellington senior squad brought a long season to a thrilling climax by grabbing a narrow victory in the Northern Plate final at Stretford in Manchester.  After a close tussle with the teams from both Bingley Harriers and Holmfirth Harriers throughout the match, it was Wellington who just pulled clear in the closing stages to win by seven points.

Ian Kimpton got Wellington off to the best possible start with a win in the 10000m.  Despite the very hot weather he recorded an excellent time of 31m 50.83s, which was good enough to also give him the silver medal in the North of England 10000m track championship which was run in conjunction with the Plate event.  He later added a second impressive performance with a strong finish in the concluding stages of the 1500m to win in 4m 15.03s.  Matt Bowser unleashed a 60 second final lap of the 5000m to win in 15m 09.02s and the other outright success for the men's squad came from Matt Houlden in the Triple Jump with 13.31m.  He followed this up with 5.71m for 2nd place in the Long Jump.  Martin Bradbury picked up a couple of good 2nd places with 11.56s in the 100m and 51.23s in the 400m.  And there were further runners-up spots on the track for Steve Gregory in the 800m (2m 00.79s) and Shane Robinson in the 3000m Steeplechase (10m 11.8s) - the latter having previously taken 3rd place in the 400m hurdles in 62.80s.  Chris Leslie finished 4th in the 200m in 24.6s and Adey White was also 4th in the 110m Hurdles in 26.48s before doing trojan work in the field with four more events.  He was 3rd in the Shot with 9.15m, 4th in the Pole Vault (2.90m), 4th in the Hammer (26.48m) and 5th in the Discus (26.47m).  Matt Bowser and Steve Gregory filled field slots in Javelin and High Jump respectively and picked up very important points.  The 4x100m relay squad scooted home in front in a speedy 45.1s but the 4x400m team had to settle for 2nd place in 3m 33.6s.

For the women's team, Ellis Whyler made a big contribution to the points by winning the Long Jump with 4.90m and picking up 2nd places in the 100m Hurdles (16.25s) and High Jump (1.50m).  There were two very welcome successes in the sprints with youngsters Shireen Timmis taking the 100m in 13.18s and Mary-Ann Phillips scoring in the 200m in 27.48s.  There was also a win in the field for Sarah Stanhope with a very good 42.01m in the Hammer.  She followed up with 4th in the Discus (25.84m) and 5th in the Shot (7.43m).  Rochelle Harrison finished 2nd in the 400m in 62.79s and was also runner-up in the 800m in 2m 22.17s.  And a further 2nd place went to Lara Thomas with 4m 51.4s in the 1500m.  Libbie Read made her senior team debut in the 3000m and acquitted herself very well in taking 3rd place in the 3000m in a personal best 11m 01.84s.  Hayley Fox cleared 2.30m for 3rd place in the Pole Vault and was 5th in the Javelin with 16.78m. Runners-up spots in the two relays with 53.46s in the 4x100m and 4m 24.3s in the 4x400m ensured the silverware would be coming back to Lincoln.
