English Schools T&F Preview Don Valley, Sheffield 10-11 July 2009 |
|
Seven young athletes from Lincoln Wellington will represent Lincolnshire Schools at the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Don Valley Stadium Sheffield on
10th-11th July. 29 athletes from Lincolnshire achieved the very tough entry standards for the national competition but the county is limited to a maximum squad of twenty five and so, for the first time, there will be four athletes with qualifying standards who are not able to compete.
Although this is hugely regrettable for those concerned, it does indicate a definite rising trend in the quality of young athletes the County is now producing with Lincoln Wellington well at the forefront of the production line. Leading the way for Wellington will be Junior Boy's Hammer thrower Dominic Sykes, who is currently ranked number four in the country in his age group and goes to Sheffield as a live medal hope. Nathan Page will be contesting the Intermediate Boy's 1500m Steeplechase and, although relatively inexperienced, he has made significant progress in recent races and if that is maintained he could also enter the medal picture. Sarah Stanhope has had a very good season and will compete in the Intermediate Girl's Hammer. Currently ranked nine in her age group, a good performance is expected. Talented multi-eventer Hannah Dunderdale will take part in the Junior Girl's Shot and will face tough opposition. The experience of competing at this level will be invaluable in future multi-event competitions. Hannah's brother Joe also appears on the Lincolnshire teamsheet to complete a remarkable family double. He will be competing in the Intermediate Boy's Javelin and his current ranking of fourteen certainly gives him the chance to be competitive. Matt Houlden has produced a string of fine Triple Jump performances for Wellington this season but will have to be in even better form to make an impact in a very hot Senior Boy's age group in that event. The final athlete from Wellington is Lara Thomas who will compete in the first ever Senior Girl's 1500m Steeplechase at this meeting. This has been her target since the start of the season and, with training going well, she will hope for significant improvement on her current best time for the event of 5m 32.5s. |
