Northern League Div2EC
Match 2 - Doncaster
6 June 2009

There was a disappointing result for the Lincoln Wellington senior team in their latest Northern League division 2 match at Doncaster.  After finishing 2nd in their opening match and with a stronger team on paper, a potentially winning challenge was expected and 5th place at the end of the afternoon therefore came as a major shock.  Much work will now have to be done in the remaining two matches if any sort of promotion effort is to be launched.

The 1500m was the best event for the men’s team, with Will Strangeway winning the A event in 4.m 1.1s after previously taking 2nd place in the 800m in 1m 58.7s.  The B 1500m also brought maximum points with a good win for Les Ball in 4m 14.2s.  The other men’s track success went to Shane Robinson, who made all the running to win the 3000m Steeplechase easily in 10m 49.0s.  Chris Leslie took 2nd place in the 100m in 12.3s with Matt Houlden finishing 5th in the B race in 12.6s after taking 2nd spot in the 400m Hurdles in 60.7s.  Neil Humberstone was 5th in the B 400m Hurdles in 72.5s and took the same position in the 200m in 24.5s.  Veteran Malc Bramhall also doubled up with 5th spot in the B 400m in 57.4s and 6th place in the B 200m in 26.5s.  Steve Gregory was a close 3rd in the A 400m in 50.3s after a good leap of 6.30m for 4th in the Long Jump.  Josh Stone was also 3rd in the 5000m in 16m 38.8s.  The outstanding field performance came from Matt Houlden, who won the Triple Jump with an excellent 13.48m and then cleared 1.70m for 6th place in the High Jump.  Mike and David Elleray together with Dan Bishop worked hard to pick up points in the remaining field events but, as the scores indicate, considerable further improvement still needs to be made in this area before the senior team can move forward.

The sole success for the Wellington women came from Sarah Stanhope with a throw of 42.65m to win the Hammer.  She was also 5th in the Discus with 20.01m and 2nd in the B Javelin with 25.18m.  The 1500m provided a good track result for the women’s team.  Lara Thomas was 2nd in the A race in 4m 58.2s and Megan Ball claimed the same position in the B race in 5m 07.6s.  Two 2nd places also came in the 3000m with Lucinda Pitcher crossing the line in 10m 31.5s in the A race and Becky White picking up a personal best 10m 59.0s in the B contest.  Rochelle Harrison ran hard for 2nd place in the 800m in 2m 22.5s and followed with 63.8s for 3rd in the 400m.  Hester Talbot was 3rd in the B 800m in 2m 32.0s and Shireen Timmis took 5th place in the B 400m in 65.8s.  The two sprints were shared by Mary Ann Phillips and Shireen Timmis with the former recording 13.9s for 5th in the 100m and 28.3s for the same position in the 200m.  The latter finished 2nd in the B 100m in 13.8s and 3rd in the B 200m in 28.6s.
Star multi-eventer Lydia Chamberlain was expected to score heavily, but an injury meant she could only contest the Javelin in which she was 4th with 27.37m.  Ellis Whyler collected very useful points in the Shot, Long Jump and High Jump.  And, in the B field events, Denise Timmis won the Long Jump with 4.36m and Paige Mitchell was 3rd in the Hammer with 29.67m.
