Northern U17/U15 T&F Championships Gateshead 23-24 May 2009 |
|
Talented Lincoln Wellington multi-eventer Hannah Dunderdale led the club’s junior athletes to a superb nine medal haul at the North of England
U17/U15 Championships at Gateshead. Competing in the U15 age group, Dunderdale produced an excellent leap of 4.90m to take gold in the
Long Jump and then picked up two further medals with 33.35m for silver in the
Javelin and a time of 12.25s for bronze in the 75m Hurdles final. A fruitful two days of competition was completed when she finished 5th in the
Shot with 9.81m. A further medal in the U15 age group went to Rhiannon Philps, who finished a good 3rd in a competitive 800m final in
2m 20.20s.
A second gold medal for Wellington came in the U15 Boys Hammer where a terrific throw of 43.94m from Dominic Sykes gave him 1st place and provided more evidence that the club’s recent field event initiative is paying dividends. The U17 Mens Javelin resulted in a third Wellington gold medal, with Joe Dunderdale getting the spear out to 55.47m for a very convincing success. A fine run from Ian Maplethorpe gave him silver in the 1500m Steeplechase in a personal best 4m 39.36s – not too far off the English Schools qualifying standard. And, in the same age group, Tom Matthews finished 7th in the 200m final in 23.53s after taking 6th place in his heat of the 100m in 11.74s. Two further Wellington medals came in the U17 Womens age group. Libbie Read produced a good effort for 3rd spot in the 3000m in 11m 06.98s and Sarah Stanhope also took 3rd position in the Hammer with a throw of 40.85m. Paige Mitchell and Laura Maplethorpe finished 10th and 11th in the same competition with 28.17m and 24.96m respectively. Mary-Ann Phillips found some hot opposition in the sprints and finished 6th in her 100m heat in 13.31s following up with the same placing in the 200m in 26.82s. |
