Oxford vs. Cambridge Varsity T&F Cambridge 16 May 2009 |
| At a very blustery Wilberforce Road track in Cambridge last Saturday, Ian Kimpton retained his Varsity 5000m title. After some good early season 5000m races for Achilles in America and a 1500m PB last week, he came into the race looking to beat his principal rival who had finished just ahead of Ian in the BUCS championships. After a slow start, the pace gradually built lap by lap. With 3 laps to go, Ian went to the front and injected more pace. With most of the partisan Cambridge crowd expecting their fast-finishing man to cruise to a win, it was particularly pleasing to see Ian run away from the field in the last lap to win in 15m 08.02s - his slowest time of the season, but by far the most satisfying race so far this year. With his most important track race of the season - where winning is everything - out of the way, Ian can now spend the rest of the summer aiming to improve his PBs from 1500m upwards. |
