Lincs T&F Championships Grantham 9-10 May 2009 |
|
Lincoln Wellington athletes got off to a great start at the Lincolnshire Track and Field Championships at Grantham and, at the end of the first day, had bagged a massive twenty three individual titles.
A remarkable feature was a brace of championship best performances in the 1500m events by the Thomas sisters.
Catrina took the U13 Girls title in 5m 15.5s with Abbie Donnelly a good 2nd in
5m 17.7s and, shortly after, elder sister Lara completed the family double with a gun to tape success in the
U20 race in 4m 52.7s. There was real evidence at these championships that the club’s new field event regime is starting to bear fruit and Hannah Dunderdale made a big impact on the first day by winning the
U15 Girls Shot with a club record 10.19m and also taking the Long Jump title with 4.93m.
There was a string of Wellington successes in the U17 Womens age group and Mary-Ann Phillips made a great start by taking the 100m title in
13.0s. Caitlyn Lynch blasted home in 44.1s to win the 300m impressively and in the field there were wins for Ellis Whyler in the shot (8.48m)
and Sarah Stanhope in the discus (28.56m). Shireen Timmis added a further sprint victory for the club by winning the
U20 100m in 13.6s.
Alex Humberstone was the star for the U13 Boys on the opening day and won the 100m comfortably in 14.2s before going on to score in the Long Jump with a leap of 4.41m. The U15 Boys produced some very good field performances. Sam Chapman took the Long Jump title with 5.25m, Liam Clarke threw a very useful 37.44m in the Javelin and there was a win in the High Jump with a clearance of 1.45m by Josh Holden. In a competitive 1500m contest, Will Arden was just touched off in a desperate finish with 4m 49.5s. Richard Brine was 3rd with 4m 52.2s and Dylan Love a close 4th with 4m 56.7s. In the U17 Mens age group, Ian Maplethorpe won the 1500m in 4m 24.0s from Jack Culpin 2nd in 4m 37.2s and a good effort from Joe Dunderdale won him the Javelin with 47.29m. Matt Houlden was successful with 61.8s in the U20 Mens 400m Hurdles. And, in the same age group, Tom Straw took the 1500m in 4m 06.6s with Chris Woodger 2nd 4m 10.4s. An impressive run by Steve Gregory gave him a win in the Senior Mens 400m in a personal best 49.4s and he is now looking ready to start fulfilling his undoubted potential. Matt Bowser made all the running to win the 1500m in a good early season time of 3m 52.5s with Will Strangeway notching a personal best 4m 02.9s for 3rd.
