Northern XC Championships
St. Helens
24 January 2009

Superb running at the North of England Cross Country Championships at Sherdley Park, St. Helens gave the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad one of the best day’s results in the club’s long history.  Recent downpours had converted the course to a quagmire but the Wellington athletes ploughed through it undeterred and returned to Lincoln with three sets of team medals - two of which were gold - and also a pair of individual silver medallists.

Great things were expected of the powerful Wellington U13 Girls squad and they did not disappoint.  A fantastic performance from Emma Tonner gave her a brilliant silver medal and she was very well supported by Bo Haywood close behind in 6th with Catrina Thomas 17th and Abbie Donnelly 36th completing the winning team.  Rhiannon Philps is more at home on the track but did well to take 48th place with Rebecca Ward finishing 101st.  Before the U13s lined up, the club already had a slightly surprise gold medal in the bag from the U17 Men’s team.  Sam Atkin made a sensible start in the conditions but worked through impressively in the second half of the race to grab the silver medal in the closing stages.  Ronnie Wilson did very well to finish 13th with Nathan Page close behind in 22nd and Ian Maplethorpe taking the important 4th spot in 37th.  This gave the Wellington squad a narrow team win ahead of the strong outfits from Sale Harriers Manchester and pre-race favourites Liverpool Pembroke.  Ryan Stevenson coped well with the testing conditions to finish a little further back in 133rd place.  There was team silver for Wellington in the U13 Boys race.  This has not been a strong age group for the club in recent seasons – football rules – but Haran Dunderdale in 7th place led home a very promising squad.  Will Arden followed in 29th with Alex Humberstone 49th, Robbie Smith 61st and Joe Shuttleworth 167th.

A massive Senior Mens field of over 600 runners was an impressive sight winding around a demanding 12k circuit.  It was not too surprising that Matt Bowser could not hold on to the cross country specialists at the front of the race.  However, 9th place was still a very sound effort and he was encouraged to be just a few metres behind Olympic 1500m runner Tom Lancashire at the finish.  Les Ball produced a strong final lap to finish 92nd with Will Strangeway 114th and veteran Jon Hughes 287th.  In the Senior Womens race, the testing conditions brought Harriet Canter’s stamina to the fore and, with possibly her best run for the club, she finished an excellent 22nd.  Lucinda Pitcher improved over 40 places on last year’s result to take 44th position and veterans Jane Clarke (77th), Susie Ardron (108th) and Janette Dunderdale (174th) all produced very good performances at this level.  In the U20 Womens race, Blue Haywood did well to take 5th place – not too far off the medallists – and Rochelle Harrison’s improved stamina kept her going well to finish 25th.  Shane Robinson led home the U20 Men in 24th place, with Tom Straw 47th and Max Ware 57th.  A fine run from Sam Shuttleworth gave him 19th spot in a big U15 Boys field.  Matt Bee followed in 39th with Matt Smith 143rd.  The U17 Women all ran well to finish 4th team.  Hester Talbot was first back in 26th place with Frances Aitchison following in 42nd, Holly Haywood 47th and Gemma Selwood 52nd.  In another big field, Libbie Read took a creditable 32nd position in the U15 Girls race.  Megan Ball was 66th and was followed by Nicola Isaacs 80th, Sheridan McWilliam 95th and Rebecca Wells 134th.
