Louth
11 January 2009
With a phenomenal eight individual titles and the same number of team awards, there was an almost complete monopoly of the Lincolnshire cross country championships by the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad. The
tough undulations of Louth’s London Road circuit held few terrors for the Wellington athletes and it is highly unlikely that these championships have ever been dominated to such an extent by one club.
The U13 Boys were first on the start line and Haran Dunderdale soon put down a Wellington marker with a totally dominant performance to come home in front in complete isolation.
Will Arden and Dylan Love had a good battle in taking the minor honours to complete the winning squad.
And this trio were followed by Billy Onion (7th), Will Talbot (14th) and Michael Harper (16th).
The first four home in the U15 Boy’s race were all in the Wellington colours with Richard Brine leading in Matt Bee, Adam Baker and Jack Culpin.
Sam Chapman picked up 10th spot with Lewis Goddard 16th and Luke Martin 19th.
There was even better to follow in the U17 Men’s contest where Wellington provided the first five across the line.
Ronnie Wilson came out on top in a competitive contest and was followed in by Ian Maplethorpe, Nathan Page, Stuart Campbell and Chris Woodger.
Jack Skeet completed the squad in 9th place. Tom Straw had an impressive run to easily take the
U20 Men’s title with Shane Robinson in 3rd place but there was no third runner in this age group to complete the team.
The Senior Men’s race was won easily by Notts AC athlete Ian Boneham, who trains with the Wellington squad and it was Ian Kimpton, chasing hard in 2nd place, who was the first club
scorer. Mark Greenwood (3rd) and Will Strangeway (8th) completed the successful team with Craig Maskell just behind in 9th place and Paul Samways 17th.
Les Ball ran hard for 2nd spot in the Veteran Men’s race with Art Connolly 6th, John Hughes (13th), Geoff Hall 23rd and Geoff Powley 32nd.
There was more Wellington domination in the U13 Girls race with Emma Tonner, Catrina Thomas and Abbie Donnelly completing a 1-2-3 with Rebekah Ward 7th.
Libbie Read in 3rd place led home a big Wellington contingent in the U15
Girl’s event. Laura Donnelly finished 4th with Megan Ball 6th and Sheridan McWilliam
9th. Rebecca Wells (13th), Isobel Lord (15th), Lucy Helas (17th) and Jade Toulson (19th) completed the squad.
The U17 Women’s title went to Georgia Ball with Hester Talbot 2nd and Francis Aitchison 3rd.
Holly Haywood was a little further back in 5th with Gemma Selwood 6th.
A strong run by Rochelle Harrison gave her the U20 title and the Senior
Women’s champion was Harriet Canter who out-stayed a persistent challenge from training partner Lucinda Pitcher.
Veteran Jane Clarke ran in the senior race for better competition and did well to finish 5th with Sarah Kimpton 6th and Susie Ardron (also a veteran in the senior race) taking 7th place.
Sylvia Strangeway was close behind these in 8th with Janette Dunderdale 11th.
In the shorter Veteran Women’s contest, Ann Storr finished 18th with Pat Kimpton 21st and Dot Fraser 22nd.
With this event being the trial for the Inter-Counties contest at Nottingham in March, a massive Wellington presence in the county team at that event looks assured.
