Lincs XC League
Match 4 - Skegness
14 December 2008

The testing sand dunes of Skegness beach presented a tough challenge for the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad at the final Lincolnshire League cross country match of the winter season.  Despite the absence of a significant number of the club’s athletes, there were still six individual Wellington winners to indicate that the club is poised to score heavily at the County Championships early in the new year

Les Ball got the Wellington contingent off to a good start with a remarkable performance in the senior men’s race.  From well off the pace at halfway, he made relentless progress in the later stages to lead inside the final mile and run out a very comfortable winner.  Will Strangeway disputed the lead for a long way but faded a little in the closing stages to finish 4th.  And Jon Hughes came back well after a persistent injury problem to finish 17th.  Jack Cornwell crossed the line 22nd followed by Dan Hogg 23rd and Darren Holian 24th.  The senior squad was completed by Geoff Hall in 41st position with Richard Titchmarsh 54th and Dave Strangeway 59th.  Lucinda Pitcher completed a Wellington double in the senior races with a clear cut success after taking a decisive lead around the halfway point and never subsequently looking troubled.  Rochelle Harrison did well to finish 3rd and Sylvia Strangeway had a good run to come home 5th to complete an easy team win.  Sarah Kimpton was next in 8th place followed by Janette Dunderdale 17th, Ann Storr 31st, Pat Kimpton 36th and Dot Fraser 38th.

Both of the U17 races also went to Wellington athletes.  Francis Aitchison impressed with an easy win in the Women’s race with Hester Talbot 3rd, Holly Haywood 4th, Gemma Selwood 6th and Laura Clarke 8th.  And, in the Men’s race, new member Sam Atkin scored by a huge margin and looks a pretty useful prospect.  Joe Dunderdale was some way further back in 6th place.

Wellington athletes occupied the first three places in the U15 Boy’s race with Jack Culpin scoring from Richard Brine and Adam Baker.  Haran Dunderdale moved up an age group to finish 4th with Sam Chapman 9th and Luke Martin 13th.  Emma Tonner was the final Wellington winner with a good effort in the U13 Girl’s contest.  Abbie Donnelly was 6th and Rebekah Ward finished 10th.

Libbie Read picked up 3rd place in the U15 Girl’s race to lead home the Wellington squad.  Laura Donnelly finished 4th with Sheridan McWilliam 5th, Jasmine Cornwell 12th and Lucy Helas 13th.  Declan Dickinson did well to take 2nd place in the U11 Boy’s race with Daniel Skinner 14th and Ben Skinner 15th.  Michael Harper was 7th in the U13 Boy’s event and in the U11 Girl’s race Holly Dickinson finished 23rd with Olivia Crowther 24th.
