National XC Relays
Berry Hill Park - Mansfield
1 November 2008

There were some excellent results for the Lincoln Wellington endurance squad at the National Cross Country Relays at Berry Hill Park in Mansfield.  Tacky going, a biting wind and top class domestic opposition made this the first big test of the winter but the club emerged with great credit in virtually every race.

The Senior Men’s performance was particularly encouraging with an improvement from 42nd last year to 22nd this year in a big field of over 150 teams. Tom Doe was a little off his best on leg 1 following a break from training with a back problem and he was some way behind the leaders in 42nd place with a time of 16m 13s for the 5k circuit.  Matt Bowser produced his best run for some time and ripped through the field on leg 2 to pick up 25 places in an excellent time of 15m 10s.  Will Strangeway dropped a couple of places with 16m 50s on leg 3 before Les Ball brought the team home in 22nd spot with 17m 09s on the final leg.  A pretty useful B team of Phil Williams (16m 39s), Mark Baddeley (17m 23s), Josh Stone (16m 56s) and Craig Maskell (18m 24s) also did well to finish in the top half of the field in 61st place.  The U13 Girls squad of Catrina Thomas (7m 56s), Bo Haywood (7m 57s) and Abbie Donnelly (8m 15s) ran well to finish in 12th place over the 2k circuit.  And, over an extra 500 metres, both the U17 Women and the U20 Women also produced fine performances to finish 12th.  Hester Talbot (9m 51s), Georgia Ball (9m 30s) and Ellie Jones (9m 57s) comprised the U17 team and the U20 squad was completed by Lara Thomas (9m 34s), Blue Haywood (8m 51s) and Rochelle Harrison (9m 39s).  There was a very good run from Stuart Campbell on the first leg of the U17 Men’s race to come back in 14th place with a time of 9m 42s for the 3k circuit.  Nathan Page picked up five places with 9m 51s on leg 2 and Ronnie Wilson completed the final leg in 10m 12s for 14th spot at the finish.  The U20 Men ran over the same distance with Shane Robinson back in 10m 07s on leg 1 for 45th position.  Tom Straw improved to 32nd on leg 2 with 9m 45s and Chris Fullerton closed the team in 27th place with 10m 11s on the last leg.

A good effort from Lucinda Pitcher brought her back in 11m 06s for 32nd on the 1st leg of a tightly packed Senior Women’s field.  Harriet Canter worked through to 27th on the 2nd leg in 11m 24s before Susie Ardron slipped back to 36th on the last leg in 12m 47s.  Consistent running from the U15 Boy’s squad placed them 49th at the finish with 7m 14s for Adam Baker on leg 1 of the 2k circuit followed by 7m 05s for Jack Culpin and 7m 21s for Matt Bee.  The U15 Girls also competed over 2k and there was a major surprise in this race with the Wellington B squad finishing ahead of the A squad.  Nicola Isaacs (8m 31s), Becky Wells (8m 55s) and Laura Donnelly (8m 01s), the latter an excellent run, finished in 53rd place overall.  And three places further back the A team of Libbie Read (8m 35s), Megan Ball (8m 37s) and Sheridan McWilliam (8m 33s) all ran perfectly well whilst fully illustrating the selection problems that team managers have to face in these events.
