Northern Knockout 1st Round
Cleckheaton
17 August 2008

The Lincoln Wellington senior squad continued their recent run of fine team performances with very good 3rd place finish in their North of England Knockout Cup and Plate competition at Cleckheaton. Despite missing out on the second place needed for an appearance in the Cup Final by just a single point the club will take their place in the Plate competition in September with high expectations.

There were some excellent victories from the men’s track squad with Matt Meanwell taking the 100m in 11.4s and Steve Gregory the 400m in 50.6s. Shane Robinson led all the way to win the 3000m Steeplechase in 10m 23.7s and after finishing 3rd in the 800m in 1m 56.2s.  Matt Bowser made all the running in the 5000m to win in 15m 13.9s.  Phil Williams was a good 2nd in the 1500m in 4m 06.0s and Josh Stone picked up 4th place in the 10000m in 35m 32.0s. Marc Afford gained valuable points with 2nd spot in the 110m Hurdles in 18.1s and 3rd place in the 400m Hurdles in 59.8s.  Matt Houlden was 3rd in the 200m in 23.4s but his best performance came in the Triple Jump with a winning effort of 13.25m. Jim Slater recorded 33.84m for 4th place in the Discus and then finished 5th in the Hammer with 22.83m. And Steve Swaby also doubled up in the field events with 5th place in the Long Jump (5.82m) and 7th position in the Javelin (32.07m). Track runners Matt Meanwell and Steve Gregory added to the points tally with useful efforts in the Shot and High Jump respectively. The outstanding women’s performance came from the in-form Lucinda Pitcher, who won the 3000m impressively in 10m 13.1s to carve a further four seconds off her recent personal best for the distance. Most of the remaining track points were scored by the club’s younger athletes with Lara Thomas leading the way with 2nd place in the 1500m in 4m 56.9s. Mary-ann Phillips was 3rd in the 200m in 26.8s, Shireen Timmis grabbed 4th spot in the 100m in 13.0s and Rochelle Harrison also picked up 4th place in the 400m in 61.2s.  Hester Talbot did well to take 3rd place in the 800m in 2m 30.1s. Team captain Nina Swaby scored well in the Hurdle events with 2nd place in the 100m in 19.0s and 3rd position in the 400m in 72.4s and she also picked up further points in the Triple Jump. A fine leap of 4.85m gave Denise Timmis 2nd place in the Long Jump and also a club record in the W45 category.  And a useful clearance of 1.40m by Mary-ann Phillips was enough to secure 2nd place in the High Jump. Hayley Fox completed a demanding afternoon with appearances in the remaining field events finishing 3rd in the Javelin, 5th in the Hammer and 6th in the Discus and Shot.
