Match 4 - Rotherham
3 August 2008
A severely depleted Lincoln Wellington senior team scrapped for every point in their final Northern League match of the season at Rotherham. And a hard earned 3rd place at the end of the afternoon ensured that the likely looking spectre of relegation was avoided and the club will remain in the 2nd division next year.
A superb contribution to the team effort came from Lydia Chamberlin who contested six individual efforts and also ran a leg of the 4x100m relay. She notched wins in the
Long Jump (5.22m), High Jump (1.60m) and 100m Hurdles (15.7s) before finishing runner-up in the
Shot (10.67m) and 200m (26.5s) and picking up 5th spot in the Javelin with 24.63m. Team captain Nina Swaby weighed in with a win in the B 100m
Hurdles in 19.4s and was also 2nd in the B Long Jump with 4.32m, 3rd in the B
Triple Jump with 8.83m and 3rd in the B 400m in 66.6s. Rochelle Harrison was 2nd in the 800m in
2m 18.4s and lined up again 90 minutes later to take 3rd place in the 400m in
62.1s. Shireen Timmis also picked up good points when finishing 3rd in the 100m in 12.9s and 2nd in the B 200m in
27.4s. Laura Ware was a good 2nd in the B 100m in 13.4s and finished 5th in the
Triple Jump with 9.23m. Despite being a little off colour Frances Aitchison kept on doggedly in the 3000m to finish 4th in
11m 30.2s. Hayley Fox had a hectic afternoon in the field events and after finishing 4th in the
Pole Vault with 2.30m she took further 4th places in the Discus with 21.10m and
Hammer with 21.66m and also recorded 17.67m for 5th place in the B
Javelin. Kathy Warhurst also scored good field points with 3rd spot in the B
Discus with 17.49m and 4th place in the B Hammer with 21.59m. Sprinter
Mary-ann Phillips cleared a useful 1.40m for 2nd place in the B High
Jump.
The outstanding men’s performance came from Tom Doe who won the steeplechase most impressively in a personal best
9m 08.7s and then pounced late in the 5000m to win in a good time of 15m
03.2s. There was a win in the B 5000m for Josh Stone in a personal best
16m 00.9s and Josh Spering took the B Steeplechase in 11m 26.6s to complete maximum points for Wellington from those two events. In the 1500m, Phil Williams was passed in the closing stages but finished 2nd in
4m 06.1s with Tom Straw doing well on his comeback run to finish 2nd in the B race in
4m 15.2s. Will Strangeway made a belated seasonal reappearance with a good 2nd place in the 800m in
1m 58.0s and Shane Robinson was 3rd in the B race in 2m 06.8s. Max Ware
(54.2s) and Mal Bramhall (55.2s) picked up useful 4th places in the 400m races with Chris Leslie also finishing 4th in the 100m in
11.9s. Matt Meanwell made his first Wellington appearance for a long time and did well to take 2nd place in the B 100m in 11.5s and 3rd spot in the B 200m in
24.4s. Matt Houlden finished 3rd in the 200m in 23.5s but had earlier produced a fine effort in the
Triple Jump to win with 12.93m. Adey White did his usual sterling work in the field events and won the
Pole Vault with 3.30m before picking up good points in five more events.
