A fine all round team effort from the Lincoln Wellington women’s squad has given them a place in the prestigious British Athletics League Plate Final at Bedford in September. In their semi-final match at Tamworth they finished runners-up to British League club Rugby and Northampton but claimed their place in the Plate final by being the top non British League club in the match.
Lydia Chamberlin got Wellington off to the best possible start in the ten event competition with an impressive win in the 100m hurdles in
15.5s. Lara Thomas went with the pace from the gun in the 1500m and although just unable to stay with the leader in the closing stages a personal best of
4m 47.4s for 2nd place was an excellent effort. In the 400m, Rochelle Harrison ran a strong race in the windy conditions to notch another runner-up spot for the club in 61.4s. The club’s rapidly developing young sprinters both performed well with Mary-Ann Phillips grabbing 2nd place in the 200m in 26.6s and Shireen Timmis taking 3rd position in the 100m in
12.9s. In the field events, Hayley Fox was joint winner of the pole vault with a clearance of 2.30m and was also 3rd in the javelin with 17.84m. Denise Timmis recorded a personal best 4.79m in the long jump for 5th place and Kathy Warhurst picked up valuable points with a throw of 21.25m in the hammer to finish 3rd. The match finished with a medley relay of
200m, 200m, 400m and 400m legs and the Wellington squad of Phillips, Timmis, Chamberlin and Harrison crossed the finish line in 3rd place to clinch their spot in the final.
The men’s team also produced some good performances but just missed out on a place in the final by finishing 3rd overall in their match. Steve Gregory was a good 2nd in a quality 400m race in 50.2s and Phil Williams was also runner-up in the 1500m in
4m 09.1s. Matt Bowser led for a long way in the 3000m steeplechase despite an early fall at one of the barriers. He was caught with two laps to go and eventually finished 2nd in
9m 32.5s. Mark Afford took 4th spot in the 110m hurdles in 18.3s and later finished 7th in the javelin with 28.00m. Chris Leslie ran a good 100m in 11.6s for 6th position and Josh Spering was also 6th in the 200m in
25.5s. Matt Houlden has been in great form in the triple jump but with that event not included in the program he turned to the long jump and cleared a very useful 6.19m for 4th place.
