Six young athletes from Lincoln Wellington faced their toughest opposition of the season when they competed at the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead’s International Stadium. The ‘Kids Olympics’ is well named with the level of performance in every event being quite phenomenal and this event has proved to be the breeding ground of most of the superstars of the sport.
Stuart Campbell fared best of the Wellington athletes with an excellent run in the
Intermediate Boy’s 1500m Steepelchase, giving him a fine 5th place in a new personal best of
4m 32.97s. He is still quite inexperienced in this event but was not very far away from the bronze medal position. A little more fluency over the barriers should see him making a serious challenge for top honours in his age group.
Blue Haywood is still getting back to peak fitness following an injury lay-off and, in the circumstances, 6th place in the
Senior Girl’s 3000m in 10m 12.46s was entirely satisfactory. She has another year in the same age group and will hopefully be back in her best shape soon. Georgia Ball had a good run in her heat of a very strong
Intermediate Girl’s 1500m field. A spirited finishing effort gave her 7th place in a personal best
4m 42.94s but was not sufficient to get her into the final. Triple jumper Matt Houlden has performed consistently well throughout the season and in the
Intermediate Boy’s event another very solid effort gave him 8th place in the final with 13.27m.
The two Wellington girls in the Junior age group both came up against some very hot
competition. Caitlyn Lynch finished 6th in her heat of the 200m in 27.45s and Hannah Dunderdale took the same position in her 75m
Hurdles heat in 12.42s.
