Northern T&F League
Match 3 - Sheffield
6 July 2008

The Lincoln Wellington senior team finished a disappointing 5th in their latest Northern League Division 2 match at Woodbourn Stadium, Sheffield. And, despite a number of good performances on the track, the club’s woeful lack of depth in the field events - particularly among the men’s squad - was brutally exposed. Until this problem is at least partially resolved there is no realistic chance of the club making any progress beyond its present position in Northern League 2.

The outstanding track performance came from Lucinda Pitcher who went clear from the gun in the women’s 3000m and came home in impressive style in a fine time of 10m 18.4s to lop seven seconds off her previous best performance. Frances Aitchison supported her well to win the B race in 11m 38.4s to gain maximum points for Wellington. The 800m was also a good result for the club with Rochelle Harrison runner-up in the A race in 2m 18.2s and Georgia Ball’s spirited finish getting her home in front on the line in the B race in 2m 23.8s. The young Wellington sprinters continued to perform well with Shireen Timmis taking second places in the A 100m in 13.0s and the B 200m in 27.5s. Mary-Ann Phillips was a very close 2nd in the A 200m in 26.6s and Laura Ware finished 3rd in the B 100m in 13.2s. A good effort from Lydia Chamberlin gave her 2nd spot in the A 100m hurdles in 15.3s with Nina Swaby taking the same position in the B race in 19.5s. Hester Talbot did well on her senior team debut with 4th position in the 1500m in 4m 56.6s and Lucinda Pitcher was back on track just an hour after her 3000m win to take 2nd place in the B 1500m in 4m 59.4s. Ellie Clarke (66.5s) and April Bontoft (74.1s) both picked up useful points in the 400m. In the field events Lydia Chamberlin did very well to win the long jump with 5.12m and also place 2nd in the high jump with 1.50m, 3rd in the shot with 10.31m and 4th in the javelin with 23.37m. Mary-Ann Phillips won the B long jump with a clearance of 4.00m with the remaining field event slots being shared between Hayley Fox, Kathy Warhurst and team captain Nina Swaby.

Ian Kimpton was the only men’s winner with a gritty effort in the 5000m taking him clear over the last few laps to cross the line in front in 15m 22.6s. Mark Baddeley was 2nd in the B race in 16m 27.5s. Matt Bowser was surprisingly beaten in the 800m in 1m 56.3s and also took the runner-up spot in the 400m in 51.9s. Shane Robinson did well on his first senior team appearance and was 2nd in the 3000m steeplechase in 10m 11.6s and 3rd in the 400m hurdles in 63.0s. Max Ware notched a useful 2nd place in the B steeplechase in 10m 43.2s. Chris Woodger picked up 3rd spot in the B 800m in 2m 06.4s and followed with 55.9s in the B 400m for 5th place. Neil Humberstone collected 3rd places in the B 100m in 12.0s and the B 200m in 24.8s with Chris Leslie 6th in the A 100m in 11.8s. Josh Stone (4m 23.5s) and Jack Thomas (4m 47.6s) took 4th places in the 1500m contests. Adey White and team captain Jim Slater worked hard to salvage field event points but it has to be said that the club has a mountain to climb in this area before it can make any further progress.
