Northern T&F League
Match 1 - Hull
3 May 2008

Terrific sprint performances from two of Lincoln Wellington’s younger athletes helped the club to a satisfactory 4th place in their opening Northern League match of the season at Hull. Shireen Timmis flew down the straight to win the A 100m in 12.9s and Mary-Ann Phillips almost matched her when taking the B 100m in 13.1s. A very strong finish in the B 200m gave Timmis an excellent double in 27.1s. And in the A 200m another excellent effort from Phillips saw her home in 2nd place in 26.7s. There were good results in the 3000m with Georgia Ball coming 2nd in the A race in a personal best 10m 27.0s and Harriet Canter taking the same position in the B race in 10m 32.9s. Rochelle Harrison produced a couple of good efforts to finish 2nd in the 800m in 2m 19.9s and follow up with 3rd spot in the 400m in 61.7s. Sarah Davey collected useful points with 2nd in the B 400m in 65.3s. A strong run from Lara Thomas gave her 3rd place in the 1500m in a personal best 4m 52.9s and she was well backed up by Holly Haywood who was runner-up in the B race in 5m 22.0s. The field events are still not Wellington’s strong suit but Kathy Warhurst, Nina Swaby and Denise Timmis all worked particularly hard to keep the scoreboard ticking over, with Kathy setting a new V40 club record of 23.51m for the hammer. Hayley Fox scored many points for the team by competing in 5 events - Discus, Hammer, Javelin, Shot & pole Vault.  A very smart 4 x 100m relay performance resulted in 2nd place in 52.9s and the 4 x 400m squad also did pretty well to take 3rd spot in 4m 19.8s.

The highlight of the men’s performances was a strong front running win by Tom Doe in the 3000m steeplechase in a good early season time of 9m 18.1s. He followed with another good effort for 3rd place in a high class 1500m in 4m 01.8s. Les Ball ran very strongly in the B 1500m to finish 2nd in 4m 12.2s – a new club record in the V40 category and a time which will see him close to the top in the national rankings in that age group. A well paced effort from Mick Jagger gave him an impressive 5000m win in a V35 club record time of 15m 26.8s. And in the B race there was another club record with a remarkable veteran performance from Jon Hughes with 3rd place in 17m 14.0s. This should also take him near the top of the V50 national rankings. Craig Maskell (2m 02.4s) and Shane Robinson (2m 05.4s) both picked up 4th places in the 800m races and the former was also 5th in the 400m in 54.6s. Malc Bramhall chipped in with 5th spot in the B 400m in 54.5s and 6th place in the 200m in 24.5s. And there were useful points in the 400m hurdles from Ryan Smith who was 3rd in the A race in 62.3s and Jim Slater with 4th place in the B race in 68.9s. Steve Swaby notched a personal best with 24.5s for 4th place in the B 200m and in the 100m Chris Leslie was 5th in 11.9s in the A race and Matt Houlden came 4th in the B contest in the same time. A club record jump from Matt Houlden won him the triple jump with 13.41m and Jim Slater took 2nd spot in the discus with a personal best 37.32m. Adey White had his usual busy afternoon collecting points in the field and Steve Swaby and Malc Bramhall also made valuable contributions with Malc equalling his club record in the 200m with 24.5s.

With a number of the senior squad unavailable for this match and several juniors also knocking on the door for selection this was a decent start to the season and better results should follow. The lack of quality field event exponents is still hampering Wellington’s progress however and it is to be hoped that current coaching initiatives in that direction bear early fruit.
