A gold medal for Blue Haywood in the U17 Womens race at the North of England cross country championships climaxed another brilliant day for the athletes of Lincoln Wellington. The windswept circuit of Roundhay Park in Leeds including the near vertical ascent of the notorious Hill 60 was no place for the faint hearted. But a string of outstanding results provided ample confirmation that the Wellington squad was up to the task.
After disputing the lead in the early stages, Haywood was soon showing daylight in her wake and pulling steadily clear in the latter stages she was never in any real danger. The year younger Georgia Ball backed her up with a terrific effort for 9th place and, with Lara Thomas 34th and Rochelle Harrison 37th, the team were delighted to pick up the silver team medals. A little further back Holly Haywood ran a very sound race to finish 58th. A further set of silver team medals went back to Lincoln after the U15 Boys race. Nathan Page and Ian Maplethorpe both had great runs to finish 8th and 9th respectively and the medal winning quartet was completed by Matt Bee 55th and Joe Dunderdale 86th. Ryan Stevenson and Ryan Paul were a little further back in 123rd and 124th. The U17 Mens team were nearly in the medals but eventually finished in 4th place - the absence of Stuart Campbell probably making the difference. Tom Straw ran very strongly to finish 16th and Shane Robinson was not too far away in 31st. Max Ware in 62nd spot and Chris Woodger 73rd completed a very solid team effort. Jack Cornwell finished 111th, Josh Spering 117th, Gavin Campbell 153rd and Henry Naughton 162nd. Bo Haywood proved that elder sister Blue is not the only talent in the family with a great run to finish 11th in the U13 Girls race and looks sure to be a medal contender in the same age group next year. Hannah Dunderdale, Abby Donnelly and Rhiannon Philps found it tough going but kept on well to finish in 90th, 100th and 160th places respectively. Haran Dunderdale has had a very good winter and another fine performance saw him back in 22nd spot in the U13 Boys event. Alex Humberstone did very well to finish 48th just holding off Dylan Love in 53rd position, with Lewis Goddard a little further back in 147th. Tom Doe has been in great form on the roads and was looking for a big run in a giant sized Senior Mens race. Unfortunately he had not been well in the week before the race and after showing very prominently in the early stages he drifted back to 31st at the finish. He is much better than that and will hope to make amends at the National Championships in February. Phil Williams found the 12km circuit very testing but was not disgraced in 127th place. Andy Dunderdale finished in 197th and Geoff Powley brought the squad home in 544th.
Josh Stone and Paul Samways committed the
unforgivable sin of arriving at the start of the Junior Mens race just as the gun went. Both set off about 60 metres in arrears and the former actually ran very well to get back to 36th place at the line. A top 20 placing was likely had he got away on terms with the rest of the field. There was a high quality field for the
Senior Womens race and the Wellington squad of Harriet Canter (53rd), Lucinda Pitcher (84th), Jane Clarke (105th)
and Janette Dunderdale (197th) all found it hard going. The
U15 Girls squad also found the competition pretty hot. Megan Ball led them home in 57th place with Laura Donnelly 79th, Gemma Sellwood
86th, Becky Wells 119th and Jasmine Cornwell 120th. |
