Lincs Schools XC Championships
Burghley Park, Stamford
19 January 2008

The outstanding recent form of Lincoln Wellington’s endurance athletes was maintained with a string of impressive performances at the Lincolnshire Schools cross country championships at Burghley Park, Stamford. The Lincolnshire team for the forthcoming English Schools cross country championships will be selected from the results of this event and Wellington athletes should figure prominently in the squad. A remarkable six of the eight individual titles went to athletes from the club and some fine efforts among the minor medal places were also recorded.

The Intermediate Boy’s event produced the race of the day with the Wellington trio of Stuart Campbell, Ian Maplethorpe and Nathan Page locked together in the closing stages and clear of the rest of the field. In an ‘eyeballs out’ sprint to the line it was Campbell who came out in front with Maplethorpe and Page finishing in that order right on his heels. A little further back Chris Woodger crossed the line in 6th place and Joe Dunderdale finished 14th. There was also some good Wellington packing at the end of the Intermediate Girl’s race. Georgia Ball was in no great hurry to take on the pacemaking but going out on the final lap she made a decisive move and was soon clear. She crossed the line a clear winner with Hester Talbot doing very well to pick up 3rd place and Ellie Jones and Holly Haywood in 7th and 8th also making strong bids to make the Lincolnshire team for the English Schools Championships. Gemma Sellwood was close behind this pair in 10th spot with Laura McMunn crossing the line 13th.

Tom Straw made virtually all of the running for a comfortable win in the Senior Boy’s contest. He did have company for most of the race but his superior stamina in the closing stages took him clear of the chasing group. Shane Robinson was never too far away and finished 4th with Max Ware completing the Wellington runners in 7th place. The Senior Girl’s race also went Wellington’s way with Lara Thomas making most of the running to record another fairly comfortable win. Rochelle Harrison chased her gamely all the way to finish an encouraging 2nd - probably her best cross country performance.

The Junior Boy’s race was won by Matt Bee in hugely impressive style. He crossed the line a long way in front of the rest of the field but Adam Baker did well to take 4th place. In the Junior Girls race Megan Ball produced her best run of the winter to finish 2nd. Laura Donnelly picked up 9th place in the same race with Hannah Dunderdale finishing 11th and Libby Reid 12th.

The Year 7 Boy’s race produced a final Wellington winner with Haran Dunderdale continuing his excellent recent form and Dylan Love running well for 4th place.

Wellington’s recent senior women’s county cross country champion, Harriet Canter, was selected to represent the North of England at the top class Cardiff Cross Challenge. On a flat and fast course which did not really play to her strengths she did very well to finish 22nd against some quality opposition and gained invaluable experience of competition at that level.
