North Midlands XC - Match 4
Wollaton Park, Nottingham
12 January 2008
|
The final North Midlands cross country league match of the winter took place at Nottingham’s Wollaton Park and there were outstanding performances from two of Lincoln Wellington’s younger athletes. In the
U13 Girls race, Bo Haywood was a very impressive winner and already appears to have every probability of matching the considerable achievements of elder sister Blue. Multi-eventer Hannah Dunderdale uses cross country for endurance training and ran well to finish 11th. Another top effort came from Nathan Page who was a clear winner of the
U15 Boys race and is looking like an excellent future prospect. Ian Maplethorpe did well to finish 3rd in the same race with Matt Bee 9th and Joe Dunderdale 14th. In the senior women’s race, Harriet Canter made her usual steady start but, making strong headway on the final two hilly laps, she had moved into a good 6th place at the finish. A little further back, Janette Dunderdale was pleased with her run in 43rd place. Haran Dunderdale has had an excellent season in the
U13 Boys events in this league and another strong run saw him back in 3rd place with Richard Brine doing well to finish
16th. With most of the Wellington squad now targeting the North of England championships at the end of January, there were only two club representatives in the senior men’s race.
U20 Josh Stone had his best North Midlands league result when taking 16th place in a field of over 200 and Andy Dunderdale also did very well to pick up 52nd place. At the subsequent presentations for the league series, Wellington picked up four individual winners awards – a record for the club. Harriet Canter took the senior women’s trophy for the second successive year and the other top performers were Haran Dunderdale in the U13 Boys category, Nathan Page (U15 Boy) and the very promising Tom Straw (U17 Men). Following her recent outstanding cross country performances, Wellington’s Blue Haywood has been selected to represent England at an international match in Seville this weekend. While many more of the club’s younger athletes will be in action at the Lincolnshire Schools cross country championships at Burghley Park in Stamford. |
