A small group of Lincoln Wellington athletes made the midweek evening trip over to Derby on Wednesday 19th December for a road
5k race. Making a welcome change from the muddy fields of cross country, conditions were excellent and there were some
outstanding performances with club and UK records broken!
Run of the evening went to the exceptional Blue Haywood. Running strongly throughout the race Blue started fast and never let up the pace. Running hard to the line she finished in an excellent time of 16m 24s! This ranks Blue number 1 in the country for her age and, if ratified, may be the fastest ever by a 16 year old in the UK for a new BRITISH RECORD! This is an outstanding performance from a very gifted athlete.
For the men Tom Straw and Shane Robinson both ran very strong and worked well together. At the finish Tom just edged it and was first home in 15m 46s which is a club U17 record, with Shane Robinson only 1 second behind in 15m 47s. These are excellent performances and highlights the level of talent at the club. Next home was senior athlete Mark Baddeley who was satisfied with his time of 16m 24s. The next 2 athletes to finish now jointly own the under 15 Boys club record. Pacing the race perfectly both Ian Maplethorpe and Nathan Page ran together strongly and sprinting to the line nothing could separate them as the both finished in a fantastic time of 16m 39s! Elliot Haywood was next athlete home finishing in a satisfied time of 16m 47s.
The final athlete home was U13 Girl Bo Haywood - sister of Blue. Bo ran a phenomenal race and finished in an incredible 19m 12s. At only 11 years old, this is an exceptional time. A huge star for the future!
