Lincs League Cross Country - Match 1
28 October 2007
The Lincolnshire League cross country season got off to a flying start on a fast circuit around the sports fields and surrounding countryside of RAF Cranwell. With firm going underfoot the track specialists were always going to be favoured
but a very strong wind sweeping across the course did put some emphasis on stamina.
In the senior women's race Lucinda Pitcher was soon at the head of the field. She drew further away as the race progressed and was a long way in front at the line. Jane Clarke (4th) and Kathy Warhurst (11th) completed the winning team with Janette Dunderdale a little further back in 15th and Pat Kimpton 46th. The very promising Bo Haywood picked up another win in the U13 Girls race with Abby Donnelly 8th and Katie McMunn 18th. And a third individual Wellington success came from Alex Humberstone in the combined U11 Boys and Girls race. Katrina Thomas was 3rd (1st girl) with Joseph Wass 26th. Only two of the U15 Boys squad turned but both did well with Ian Maplethorpe taking 2nd place with Matt Bee not far away in 3rd. There were team wins for Wellington in both of the U17 races. Sara Davey made good late headway to finish runner-up in the U17 womenís race just ahead of new member Rochelle Harrison. Holly Haywood finished in 4th spot with Ellie Clarke 5th, Francis Aitchison 6th and Charlotte Spratt 7th. Stuart Campbell led in the U17 menís squad in 2nd place with Jack Cornwell 6th and Chris Woodger 7th. Further down the field were Jon Humberstone 10th, Max Weir 11th, Ben Rowe 14th, Sam Manders 16th, Neil Humberstone 18th and Gavin Campbell 19th.
In a big senior menís field Mick Jagger led till halfway before eventually taking 2nd place. Danny Roome was 15th with Phil Malt right behind him in 16th. Richard Titchmarsh came next in 46th position ahead of Simon Machin 74th and Neil Campbell 76th. There was a huge club turnout in the U15 Girls race and a team win was duly notched up. Laura Donnelly had a good run to finish 5th with Ellie Jones 7th and Megan Ball 8th completing the winning team. Hester Talbot came next in 9th spot followed by Jasmine Cornwell 11th and Caitlin Lynch 12th. Becky Wells, Sheridan McWilliam, Mary-Ann Phillips and Gemma Selwood were closely grouped in 13th to 16th places and were followed by Laura McMunn 22nd, Lindsey Campbell 29th and Laura Maplethorpe 39th. Dylan Love was first across the line for Wellington in the U13 Boys race in 5th place. He was some way ahead of Luke Martin 15th, Connor Malt 20th and Jake Moss 26th.
This was a highly satisfactory start to the winter season and Wellington will be wheeling out their big guns in force next weekend at the National cross country relays at Berry Hill Park, Mansfield with high hopes of some prominent performances in a number of the races.
