With Lincoln Wellington AC hosting their first Northern League match for two seasons and with relegation still as much of a possibility as promotion, a strong performance was needed. Unfortunately for the team a large number of the more experienced athletes were unavailable. So, with backs to the wall, caution was thrown to the wind and the
club's emerging youth talent were given their chance to shine at the senior level.
The Lincoln Wellington wonder kids all gave impressive performances and all staked their claim for regular positions in the senior team. Shireen Timmis came third in the A string 100m and first in the B string 200m races, her 200m time was the second fastest time of the day by a female
athlete. Nathan Cox and Neil Humberstone both won their respective B string 400m and 400m Hurdle races and Matthew Holden showed his awesome potential by finishing second in a rain drenched triple jump contest that had to be abandoned after the fourth round.
Ben Rowe and Emily Hardy, in their first race over the full size senior hurdles, gave respectable performances in the A string races.
On the track, neither of the senior teams were to be out done, with the reformed character that is Matthew ‘Lovejoy’ Bowser
showing his class by destroying the other runners in the 800m and finishing second in his first 400m race of the
season. Phil Williams (1500m), Mark Baddeley (steeplechase) and Ian
Kimpton (5000m) all picked up valuable wins for the team. The women’s track team was just as impressive with Lara Thomas, 400m and Georgia Ball, 800m, both picking finishing second in the A string events and Sarah Davey, winning the B string 800m.
The men gave possibly their strongest field performance for quite sometime with Adey White, pole vault, and Jim Slater, discus, gaining valuable second
places, and the reliable Steve Swaby gave his all in a dangerously wet high jump competition. In the javelin, the debuting Sean Ryan finished second in the A string and Russ ‘the’ Muhl won the B string. For the women, Lydia Chamberlin won the Shot
Putt and finished second in the Long Jump with the effervescent Denise Timmis leaping like a young salmon to finish second in B string contest. Club stalwarts Nina Swaby, Kathy Warhurst and Hayley Fox also picked up valuable points.
With the team achieving a third place finish and relegation seemingly avoided a big thank you should be sent out to all those athletes who braved the wet conditions, in particular all the young athletes who stepped up to the mark and helped the club in its hour of need.
As the last match at Doncaster looms, a strong performance and lot a good luck could see the Lincoln Wellington reach the promotion place offs for the first time in two years.
