BMC Grand Prix
Watford
30 June 2007

Gary Warhurst reports on the British Milers Club/Nike Grand Prix meeting incorrporating the world 10000m trials at Woodside Stadium, Watford.

There were some excellent performances from the five Lincoln Wellington athletes who had achieved the qualifying times required in order to compete in this prestigious annual meeting, which featured most of the top middle and long distance runners in the country plus a smattering of international athletes, some of whom acted as pacemakers.

The evening of competition began in warm humid conditions which turned to light drizzle and almost imperceptibly into heavy rain but failed to dampen the spirits of competitors or spectators.

The first Lincoln Wellington athlete to compete was Lara Thomas. All races are graded according to the best times of the athlete and Lara was running in the women's 800 metres D race.  At the bell she was just behind the leading group and going well but gradually lost touch around the bend and down the back straight, running strongly to the finish she crossed the line in 6th place in 2m 18.09s, a time she has only bettered once before.

Next to feature was Blue Haywood in the women's 1500m D race. Blue was always in the thick of the action and ran a well judged race to place 12th of 15 in an excellent time of 4m 35.59s, a new personal best.

Competing in the mens 800 E race, Wellington and Birmingham university athlete Tom Doe also placed 5th in a time of 1m 54.51s.
The final Wellington athlete in action on the night was Matt Bowser. Competing in the mens 1500 B race during a heavy downpour. Matt ran an intelligent race, gradually moving up through the field on each lap after a steady start and with 300m to go was in a perfect position on the shoulder of the leader. Continuing to run hard he faded slightly down the finishing straight to place 6th in a very good time of 3m 46.25s.

All the athletes are to be congratulated on their performances at such a high standard meeting and all are looking to improve as the season gets into full swing over the next few weeks.
