Roger Bannister Track
Oxford
10 May 2007

A fine performance from Lincoln Wellington track athlete Ian Kimpton (20) provided him with the opportunity to meet two of the all time greats of British middle distance running. Oxford University student Ian, from Welton near Lincoln, was competing in a mile race to celebrate the re-opening of the Iffley Road track where the then Roger Bannister ran his world famous race to break the four minute mile barrier for the first time in 1954. After winning the race in a very creditable time of 4m 28.8s, Ian was delighted to be introduced to the now Sir Roger Bannister after whom the track has now been named. To complete a momentous day for Ian he was also able to exchange a few words with dual Olympic gold medallist Lord Sebastian Coe who was invited to be present for the re-opening of the historic track.'

Sir Roger Bannister and Lord Coe are in the forefront of the picture with Ian second from the right.
