Gateshead
7-8 July 2006
Six athletes out of the twenty five strong team from Lincolnshire represented Lincoln Wellington A.C. and Lincolnshire Schools at the English Schools Athletics Championships which were held this year at the amazing International Stadium in Gateshead. This meeting is the biggest event of the season for the best young athletic talent in the country with many of the best known senior stars of athletics beginning their careers at these championships.
In the Junior Girls age group Georgia Ball made her first appearance at these championships competing in the 1500m, she ran a brave 5.09.15 to finish 10th in her heat, to then limp off the track for treatment in the physiotherapy room. In the Junior Boys 1500m Jack Skeet ran a strong 4.21.67 to finish 6th in his heat to qualify for the final on the Saturday. In the final Jack again ran an impressive time of 4.22.99 to finish 10th.
Lincoln Wellington had three athletes competing in the Intermediate girls age group, first was Lara Thomas in the 800m. In the first year of this age group she ran confidently to finish 5th in her heat running a new PB of 2.18.34 and to qualify for the Semi Finals a few hours later, running 2.22.84 to finish 7th. Becki Jones competing in the 300m Hurdles ran a technically good race in 47.57 to finish 7th in her heat. However, the performance of the championships for Lincoln Wellington must go to Blue
Haywood (running for Nottinghamshire), still bottom of the age group she ran impressively to achieve 3rd place in the 3000m final with a time of 9.57.88.
Multi-eventer, Lydia Chamberlin, made her final appearance at the English Schools Championships in the Senior Girls 100m Hurdles. After having an athlete hit a hurdle coming into her lane, Lydia finished 5th in her heat with a time of 15.69. However, Lydia will again be representing Lincolnshire Schools in the heptathlon and will be aiming to improve her 2005 placing of 5th position.
