Matt Bowser took the opening leg and a cracking effort over the 5.2 kilometre circuit saw him back in a very close 3rd place in a splendid
time of 14 minutes 50 seconds which would eventually place him 9th fastest in the whole race. Will Strangeway followed on leg two and a
very sound effort gave him a time of 16.01 and 9th place. Les Ball ran an eye-catching 16.38 on the 3rd leg to keep the squad in contention
in 13th place. And although Dean Houlton dropped ten places on the 4th leg he was well satisfied with a time of 17.29. Last minute reserve
Mark Plaskett ran with credit to come back in 17.18 on leg 5 - slipping just three places further back to 26th spot and Tom Herbert ran a
fine last leg to hold that position with a time of 16.30.
95 teams set out on the opening leg of the race and, in finishing in 26th position, the Wellington squad produced a very creditable
performance and it may well be enough to qualify them for the National six stage relays at Birmingham in three weeks time.
