Match 4 - Derby

On Sunday the 7th of August, over 25 athletes, as well as spectators and officials from Lincoln Wellington travelled over to Derby for the 4th match in the northern league this year. The weather was fair with sunny intervals and conditions were generally good on the track apart from the odd breeze in certain events.  The Wellington athletes knew that nothing short of a convincing victory in this match would allow them to win the league.

MENS RESULTS. In the 400m hurdles, Steve Swaby came 6th in the A race with a time of 66.4s, his team-mate in the B race was Geoff Powley. Geoff came 5th and crossed the finish line in 71.6s. Graham Wright won the A race in the 800m, attaining a time of 2m 00.7s.  Matt Bowser also won the B event with a time of 2m 02.6s.  In the 100m, Steve Blagdon came 2nd in the A race in a time of 11.3s. In the B race, Steve Swaby achieved a time of 12.6s, placing him 4th.  Tom Herbert ran a time of 10m 08.1s in the 3000m steeplechase putting him in 3rd position. Geoff Powley ran alongside Tom in the B race and came 4th, passing the line in a new V40 club record time of 15m 05.8s.  In the 110m hurdles, Adey White came 5th and Ian Parker finished 4th achieving times of 20.2s and 20.6s. In the A race of the 400m, Graham Wright ran it in 52.0s and, in the B race, Mark Plaskett crossed the line in 54.4s, picking up 1st and 2nd places.  In the 1500m, Matt Bowser and Will Strangeway both came 1st in their races with times of 3m 55.2s and 4m 06.0s.  Steve Blagdon ran in the A race of the 200m, getting a time of 22.9s, his team-mate Tom Duffield won the B event in a time of 23.6s.  Matt Bowser ran in the 5000m, alongside him was Simon Bell. Matt came 3rd in a very competitive A race in 15m 35.5s, Simon was 2nd and his time was 16m 27.2s.  In the field events, Nigel Winchcombe came 1st in the hammer throwing 52.3m. Adey White came 2nd with 26.86m in the B event. Steve Swaby and Adey White both came 3rd in the Long jump, leaping 5.78m and 5.33m. In the Discus, Ian Parker threw 34.84m placing him 4th, Adey White threw 28.50m gaining 3rd position. Adey and Geoff Powley also both came 2nd in the pole vault, reaching heights of 3.10m and 2.50m respectively.  In the A shot putt, Ian Parker came 3rd with a distant of 10.82m, Adey White again followed suit with 3rd position with a throw of 9.79m. Javelin throwers Ian Parker and Geoff Powley came 3rd and 2nd in their categories, throwing 45.28m and 39.74m. Steve Swaby jumped 10.72m placing him 4th in the triple jump. Alongside him was Adey White, who came 5th with a jump of 10.13m. Steve Swaby jumped again in the high jump, picking up 3rd A place attaining a leap of 1.60m.  Ian Parker closely beat him, jumping 1.65m in the A competition placing him 4th. Two strong relay teams finished the match and achieved 3rd in the 4x100m with a time of 46.6s and won the 4x400m in 3m 27.8s.

WOMENS RESULTS. In the 400m hurdles, Becki Jones came 3rd in with a time of 67.3s, Nina Swaby crossed the line in 73.0s and came 2nd. Sarah Coates came 3rd in the 800m achieving a time of 2m 31.3s.  Racing alongside her was Annette Bell who finished 2nd in 2m 36.1s. Nina ran again in the 100m and came 6th in 13.8s. In the B race Cat Clark-Field was 2nd with a time of 14.2s. In the 100m hurdles, Lydia Chamberlin and Becki Jones both came 1st in their categories, Lydia crossed the line in 16.3s and Becki got 18.9s. Lucinda Pitcher ran an excellent race gaining a new personal best of 10m 36.4s in the 3000m and Annette Bell also ran a quick time of 11m 14.0s in the B race, placing both of them in 2nd position. In the 400m, A runner Liz Ward came 1st in 60.9s, Josina Clarke followed in the B race with a new personal best of 62.9s, finishing 2nd. Sarah Coates came 3rd in the 1500m crossing the finish line at 5m 09.4s, Becki Jones ran alongside Sarah coming 2nd in the B race with a time of 5m 12.9s. In the 200m, Lydia Chamberlin finished in 27.0s, attaining 3rd position, her team-mate Liz Ward sprinted round in 28.8s placing her second. On the field for the women competing in the hammer were Hayley Fox and Danielle Bryant, they both finished 2nd in their groups. Hayley threw 20.11m and Danielle achieved 18.09m. The same pair both competed in the shot putt with Danielle winning the A event with 9.59m and Hayley finishing 6th with 4.69m.  Lydia Chamberlin jumped 1.60m in the high jump and Cat Clark-Field leapt 1.40m, both attaining 2nd place. In the triple jump, Liz Samways jumped 8.34m picking up 5th A place, Natalie Jones jumped 8.27m picking up 4th place.  Hayley Fox and Natalie Jones both won the pole vault with Hayley reaching a height of 2.40m and Natt leaping 1.90m. In the discus, Danielle Bryant threw 27.39m, coming 3rd in the A category.  Hayley Fox finished 4th in the B event with 20.19m. Danielle threw again in Javelin with a distance of 28.41m, competing alongside her was Liz Ward who gained a distance of 17.06m metres, both throws put the ladies in 3rd place. The women's relay teams for Lincoln both achieved very creditable 2nd places with 52.2s (4x100) and 4m 20.2s (4x400).

At the end of the day, it meant Lincoln Wellington finished 1st with a massive 427 points! We were followed by Derby with 412 points, Boston came 3rd with 379. Chesterfield were 4th, winning 312 points. Holmfirth had 283 points chased by Doncaster who gained 244 points.  This victory gave Wellington the league title and the chance to move up to Division 1 if they do well in the playoff match in early September.
