Consett
29 January 2005
(Report on the boys and mens races)
The Northern Cross Country championships for 2005 was held in
Consett. It was a pleasant day - no wind or rain but bright skies. The courses varied from
3k for the U13s to 12k for the senior men. The course had a killer of a hill which the senior men had to venture up 4 times!
In places, it was ankle deep in mud and very tough to run on.
The first race of the day was the U17 men setting off round the 6k course. Tom Herbert and Mark Plaskett ran together on the first lap of the two lap course before Tom pulled away from Mark to finish 38th (22.15) and Mark finishing 43rd (22.21) only 6 seconds splitting the two runners. Then following closely behind Mark and Tom was Sam Delaney who finished 73rd and had to make a dash for the line narrowly escaping a pack of runners who were closing in on Sam in the final stages of the race. Finally Phil Pocknee finished in 128th with a great sprint finish to his first major championships.
The next race on the course was the under 15 boys competing over 4k. Competing
for LWAC in this age group were Elliot Haywood, Jack Ramsden, Jake Coyle and
Beren Cross. They all had a good run with Elliot finishing 95th (15.21).
He was followed in by Jack Ramsden finishing 137th with a time of 16.05.
Closely following him was Jake Coyle in 145th with a time of 16.24 then finally
Beren Cross in 153 with a time of 16.37.
Then on to the course was the under 13 boys in this race was Jack Skeet who ran a great race
to finish 3rd and be the highest positioned Lincoln Wellington of the day.
He finished with a fantastic time of 11.07. Also competing in this race were Joe Dunderdale who came 73rd with a time of 12.24
and twins Neil and Jonathan Humberstone who came 95th and 145th with times of 12.47
and 14.09.
Next on the course was the senior men who ran in a enormous field of 556 the men representing us in this race were Graham Wright, Russ Haywood and Mick Ramsden who all ran well and finished 228th with a time of 49.16, 465th
in 58.20 and 506th with a time of 61.08.
Then finally the last race of the day was the U20 men. Due to illness, we only had one competitor in this race and this was Roy
Smith, who had a great run and finished 23rd with a time of 27.58.
