Annette Bell ran the opening leg for the Wellies and battled against high winds
and a splitting headache to hand over in 75th place out of 92 starters in a time
of 17 minutes 59 seconds. As Cat Foley set off on the second leg, the heavens
opened and a downpour began that went on for over 8 hours. Undeterred, she
pressed on and gained 19 places for the team to hand over in 56th position
having run an excellent time of 16 minutes 38 seconds for the 4314m lap. The
third leg was taken by Rowena Harrison, who gained a further 8 places for the
team having run 17 minutes 22 seconds (a big improvement over last year) and
handed over in 48th place. The final leg saw Anne Gilroy stepping into the
breach to complete the team. She found the hilly course very demanding
after suffering a number of recent injuries but battled on bravely to bring the
team home in 51st place having taken 19 minutes 58 seconds for the lap. at website@lwac.org.uk

Sutton Park, Birmingham
23 October 2004
Four of our athletes travelled to Sutton Park for
the annual road relay championships. With places up for grabs in the Great
Britain team for the Ekiden relay in Japan next month, the standard of
competition was very high.
