The 10 mile race went off first, with 7 LWAC runners in the field in the field.
John Holmes was first LWAC man home followed by Steve Campion. Anne Gilroy
was the second woman to finish. Next came Michelle Watson who, although
the first vet to finish outside the top 3, did not win a prize. Shirley Devlin had a
good run in the warm sunshine and won an age group prize into the bargain. Tracy Carnall and Pat Kimpton took
the run at an easy pace and finished together having put the world to rights with their jaws working as hard as their legs.
For the shorter races, the Athletes competed on a 300m, grass track that had two very tight 50m bends. First
onto the track was the male 800m. Representatives from LWAC in that race were William Strangeway, Alex Thomas and David
Strangeway. From the gun William took the lead and led all the way to finish first by at least 50m. Alex worked hard and ran
with another competitor on his shoulder, but pulled away from him on a fast last lap to finish a good second. David worked
well to finish fourth.
The second race of the day was the female 800m race. As the gun sounded Kathleen Warhurst and Sarah Kimpton formed a small
group at the front, along with Ruth Bampton (Boston & District AC). As they approached the second lap Sarah dropped to third place, while
Kathleen took the lead and had a fast finish to win the 800m race, with Sarah Kimpton finishing in a strong third position.
The final race was the mixed mile race. Here the wind had become a little stronger and it was slightly cooler. Again from
the gun William Strangeway led the mile for all five and a half laps to a glorious victory, lapping everyone but Cat Foley
who clearly won the women’s section by a good 150m. Coming in second and third were Kathleen Warhurst and Susie Ardron, who
battled throughout the entire race. To begin with Susie led, looking very comfortable with the pace, but Kathleen had a
storming sprint finish to pip Susie on the line and finally David Strangeway finished looking very good, a little way behind
in fourth position.
Catrina Thomas ran in the year one and year twos 80m. This race had finals and heats. Catrina was in the second
heat and she ran her race neck and neck all the way to pip a girl on the line. In the final Catrina easily came through to
win the 80m by at least five metres. at website@lwac.org.uk
