Young Athletes Open
Cudworth, Barnsley
11 July 2004

A group of Lincoln Wellington athletes and supporters travelled to Barnsley's Dorothy Hyman Stadium in Cudworth to compete in the annual Barnsley AC Young Athletes Open Trophy Meeting.

A very large entry meant that athletes had to run heats in order to make the finals. Qualifying being first two in each heat and 3 fastest losers.

First LWAC athlete on track was Hester Talbot who placed 6th in the U13 girls 100 metres with a time of 15.8 seconds. Natalie Jones then competed in the U15 girls 200 and placed 7th in 32.2 before going on to place 6th in the long jump with a PB leap of 3 metres 71.

In the 800 metres heats, Hester Talbot ran a controlled race to place 2nd and qualify for the final with a time of 2 minutes 37.5 in the U13 Girls. For the U15 girls, Becki Jones and Lara Thomas were drawn in the same heat. From the gun Lara followed the pace with Becki a little further behind, coming off the final bend a storming finish saw Becki finish 1st and qualify with a time of 2.29.0. Just behind Lara produced a strong run to place 4th in a fine new personal best of 2.31.6 but was unlucky to miss out on qualifying by one place.

After the favourable weather conditions earlier in the day for the heats, the finals of the 800 metres were run in light rain with strong winds and it was noticeably colder under the darkening skies. In the U13 girls race, Hester, easily the smallest athlete, battled hard to place 5th in 2 minutes 41. In the U15 girls, Becki Jones tried her best but found herself tiring in the finishing straight, but showing real determination she just managed to grab third place in a time of 2 minutes 26.2, her second best ever time.

Also competing on the day was Katrina Thomas (unattached) in the U11 girls 600 metres. The tiny 7 year old ran very wisely, starting cautiously at the back of the field and then moving past one runner after another with a very spirited effort to finish 9th of 15 in 2 minutes 18.6.
