English Schools T&F Championships
Gateshead
9-10 July 2004

Three athletes from Lincoln Wellington A.C. represented Lincolnshire Schools at the English Schools Athletics Championships which were held this year at the superb International Stadium at Gateshead. This meeting is the pinnacle of the season for the best young athletic talent in the country and many of the best known senior stars of athletics began their careers at these championships.

Rachael Nathan was making her final schools appearance in the senior girls 3000 metres and although she was a previous dual winner of the event in the intermediate girls age group a four month break from training during the winter and consequently a very late start to her season meant her expectations were not too high. In a fast run race she settled in 4th place some way off the pace and at halfway was fully 40 metres behind the 3rd placed athlete. With two laps to go however she picked off the two girls ahead of her and finished in good style to collect the silver medal in a very creditable time of 9 mintutes 39.12 seconds - a little way off her best but a most encouraging return. She will now aim to string together a couple of months of good training and should then be ready to reclaim her place among the best juniors in the country for the cross country season.

In the intermediate girls 200m Lydia Chamberlin ran an excellent heat to finish in 2nd place in a good time of 26.18 and ensure her place in the semi-final. She improved her time in that race to 26.07 despite the cool and breezy conditions but unfortunately just missed a place in the final when crossing the line in 5th place.

Tom Duffield also made the semi-final of his event which was the intermediate boys 400m. A time of 51.75 for 4th place in his heat was sufficient to see him through to the semi as a fastest loser. A moderate time of 53.34 for 8th place in that race was disappointing however and with his recent training having gone well a better result was expected. He will have the chance to make amends at the AAA's under 17 championships at Birmingham in August.
