National Cross Country Relays
Mansfield
8 November 2003

The Lincoln Wellington under 13 girl's team spearheaded some excellent performances from the club's athletes at the National Cross Country Relays at Mansfield. With most of the top clubs in the country taking part the opposition was formidable but Wellington fielded at least one complete team in every age groups and they all ran with great credit.

Blue Haywood led off for the under 13 girls and a strong run saw her back in 4th place in a time of 7 minutes 28 seconds for the 2 kilometre circuit. Charlotte Hanson picked up one place with 7.53 on leg 2 to take the team into 3rd and Lara Thomas gave it everything on the last leg but was overhauled in the closing stages and crossed the line 4th despite a fine time of 7.51. Another close shot at a medal came from the club's under 20 women's squad. Lucinda Pitcher was 9th on leg1 of the 2500m lap in 9.21 before Rachael Nathan tore round in 8.39 on leg 2 to see the team in the bronze medal position. Sarah Coates had a number of the star runners to contend with on the final leg and despite a good time of 9.26 she slipped back four places to finish close up in 7th . The senior men's race saw many of the top names in British endurance running taking part. In the circumstances 21st place for the Wellington squad was an excellent effort. Tom Doe had a very sound run on leg 1 to return in 25th place with 15.41 for the 5000m circuit. The in form Matt Bowser then unleashed a 'corker' to pick up 11 places on leg 2 in 15.15. Simon Bell (16.48) and Ronnie McWilliam (16.39) completed a strong quartet. For the B team there was a particularly good effort on leg 2 by Andy Shepherd who went round in 16.38.

There was a great 1st leg by Jake Coyle for the under 13 boy's team to give him 5th position in 7.11. Neil Humberstone recorded 8.29 on leg 2 and a good time of 7.40 on the final leg by Jon Humberstone placed the boys 20th overall. Consistent running placed the under 20 men's team 22nd at the finish with legs of 9.53 from Will Strangeway, 9.48 from Roy Smith and 9.42 from Jason Hall. The two under 17 men's squads were also closely matched. Ian Kimpton (9.50), Danny Roome (9.51) and Mark Plaskett (10.09) were 26th for the A squad. A remarkable 9.54 from Sam Delaney on leg 1 was followed by 10.11 from Tom Herbert and 11.01 from Gary Cruickshank to place the B team 39th. Jack Ramsden (7.29) took the opening leg for a reshuffled under 15 boy's team Elliott Haywood (7.30) and Beren Cross (7.50) completed the squad which was not at all disgraced in finishing 53rd. The under 15 girl's team finished 30th overall with Liz Harley coming back in 7.45 on leg 1 followed by Josina Clarke (8.24) and and Rebecca Jackson (8.35).

For the under 17 women Emily Taylor handed over 36th on the opening leg in 10.41. Tash Johnson picked up six places in 10.07 on leg 2 and Sarah Kimpton improved a further four places in 10.43 on the last leg to finish 26th. The senior women's team was led off by Annette Bell with a time of 11.30 for the 3000m circuit. Katie Tilley (12.21) and Kathy Warhurst (12.28) placed the team 38th at the line. Alison Dale (15.13), Trish Penistan (13.40) and Ann Gilroy (13.04) comprised the B team which finished 4th.  Jane Ramsden (14.33) and Tracy Carnall (16.16) ran as an incomplete C team.

Despite the presence of so many star clubs it was particularly encouraging for Wellington to be one of only four clubs to field at least one full team in every event.
