North of England Road Relays
Silksworth
5 October 2003

Chaos reigned at the conclusion of the under 13 girls race at the Northern Junior Road Relays at Sunderland.

After a superb performance by the Lincoln Wellington squad to win the silver medals - the best result at this event by a Wellington team - an objection for alleged pacemaking was controversially upheld by the referee and the girls were disqualified. All the club's parents and officials who were present at the meeting were quite adamant that a serious error of judgement had taken place and the club has lodged an official appeal with the North of England. Regrettably this will not be heard for several weeks. A terrific effort on leg 1 from Blue Haywood (9.08) brought her back in 2nd place and also gave her the 2nd fastest leg of the whole race. The runner-up position was then maintained by Charlotte Hanson (9.47) on leg 2 and Lara Thomas (9.42) on leg 3. Regardless of the result of the appeal this squad look set for a fruitful winter season.  Charlotte Gray (10.48) and Chelsea Coyle (10.02) ran in an incomplete B team.

In the under 13 boys race there was another fine Wellington run from Jake Coyle on leg 1 with a time of 10.11 for 3rd fastest in the race. Henry Naughton (12.09), Neil Humberstone (12.44) and Jon Humberstone (11.48) completed the squad which finished a very creditable 7th. The Wellington under 17 women also produced a good team result. Amy Connolly and Emily Taylor recorded 9.46 and 9.56 respectively on the first two legs before a cracking 3rd leg from Natasha Johnson in 9.25 (12th fastest in the race) brought the team through to an excellent 5th place at the line. Sarah Kimpton (10.36) and Amy Milinkovic (10.33) ran as another incomplete B team. Liz Harley is another of the club's very promising youngsters and an opening leg of 9.18 in the under 15 girls race underlined her potential. Kelly Gilbert (9.54) and Josina Clarke (10.18) took the last two legs to place the club 13th overall. A club B team of Rebecca Jackson (10.37), Rachel Humberstone (10.46) and Helen Penistan (10.26) did well to finish in 25th place.

Ian Kimpton has got his training regime back on line in the last couple of months and a strong run on the opening leg of the under 17 men's race brought him back in 4th spot in 9.13. (10th fastest of the race). Tom Herbert (9.59), Sam Delaney (10.01) and Mark Plaskett (10.06) all produced useful efforts to place the club 10th overall. Gary Cruickshank (10.33) and Dexter Haywood (10.45) ran the first two legs of this race as an incomplete B team. The under 15 boys race was very strongly contested and the Wellington boys were always just off the leading group. Elliott Haywood (10.41), Jack Ramsden (10.44), Beren Cross (11.46) and Ryan Smith (11.47) combined to finish in 19th place at the line.  Alex Thomas (12.14) ran as the only member of the B team.
