The Wellington under 15 girls were very impressive winners of their race. Kelly Gilbert (5.14),
Josina Clarke (5.27) and
Liz
Harley (5.11) had well over a minute to spare at the line. The Wellington B team finished in 3rd spot with legs of 6.31 from
Rebecca Jackson, 5.32 from Rachel Humberstone and 5.26 from
Helen
Penistan. A good opening leg of 7.47 from Tom Duffield got
Wellington in front in the under 15 boy's race. Elliott Haywood (8.12) and Ashley Smith (8.06) ensured that they stayed
comfortably ahead of the B team who took the silver medals via Beren Cross (8.36),
Jack Ramsden (8.18) and
James Dray (7.45).
The latter was the fastest lap of the race.
The Wellington under 17 girls had virtually no opposition in their race and Emily Taylor (8.56),
Sarah Kimpton (9.22) and
Natasha Johnson (9.01) completed a straightforward win. The under 17 men's race was a duel between two evenly matched
Wellington teams. Tom Herbert (9.43) and
Josh Stone (9.55) put the A team ahead after two laps.
Mark Plaskett went round in
9.40 on lap three but was overhauled by a great last lap from Ian Kimpton who secured a B team win in 9.07 after 9.48 from
Sam Delaney on leg 1 and 10.06 from Gary
Cruickshank on leg 2.
The Wellington senior men's team was only put together on the day but they were still strong enough to continue the club's
winning sequence. Will Strangeway rallied well in the final stages of leg 1 to hand a narrow lead to
Andy Shepherd in 14.18.
The latter extended this considerably on leg 2 in 14.06 and Roy Smith had plenty in reserve on leg three to clinch the win in
14.58. The Wellington stranglehold was finally broken in the veteran races with Russ
Haywood, Dave
Strangeway and Ricky
Miller who just missed a medal place in the mens race and Trish Penistan (12.26),
Pat Kimpton
(14.40) and Ella Naughton (13.24)
who had to settle for 2nd place in the womens race.

Lincoln
28 September 2003
Lincoln Wellington athletes enjoyed a near monopoly of the medals at the Lincolnshire Road Relay Championships which were held
round the cycle track circuit at Yarborough Leisure Centre. The Under 11 girls team was first on the scoreboard with Hester
Talbot (3 minutes 5 seconds), Mary Ann Phillips (3.13) and Megan Ball (3.13) all running strongly round the 700 metres circuit
to record a highly convincing victory. The under 13 girls squad is particularly strong at the moment and the two Wellington
teams filled the gold and silver medal positions. Blue Haywood ripped round the 1500m circuit in 5.07 to open up a clear lead
for the A team and this was further extended by Charlotte Hanson (5.23) on leg two and
Lara Thomas (5.18) on the third leg.
The winning margin was huge and this trio will be contenders for honours at a higher level before the winter is over.
Chelsea
Coyle (5.26) ran a good opening leg for the B team and Gemma Ball (5.57) and
Rebecca Dobson (5.56) completed a creditable
performance from the second string squad. The under 13 boys race was much closer but Wellington still emerged comfortable
winners. Jake Coyle went round in a fine 4.44 on the first leg - one second down on the leader.
Neil Humberstone (5.29) on leg
two turned the deficit into a five second advantage and Jon Humberstone completed the win with 5.21 on leg three coming back
15 seconds clear of his nearest pursuer.
