BAL Plate Final
Bedford
16 August 2003

The combined Lincoln Wellington men's and women's team enjoyed one of the best days in the club's history when they finished runners up in the final of the British Athletics League Plate Competition at Bedford. This was the first time Wellington has reached the final of this prestigious competition and despite being the underdogs on paper they actually headed the leader board for a short time in the later stages. At the final reckoning they had to settle for 2nd place behind a talented squad from Herts Phoenix AC but Wellington did have the compensation of collecting the Dick Dunster Trophy for the most improved team of the competition.

There were many outstanding individual performances by the clubs athletes with Jenny Pacey possibly grabbing the spotlight with a winning long jump of 5.92m - a new club record and a personal best by 20cm. An outstanding throw of 50.26m won Nigel Winchcombe the men's hammer and he followed with 3rd place in the discus (37.43m) and 4th in the shot (11.45m). A club record 9.18.96 gave Tom Doe a close 2nd place in the 3000m steeplechase but club athletes won both 1500m races. After Matt Bowser had run very well to finish 2nd in the 800m in a speedy 1.52.53 he was a very comfortable winner of the 1500m in 3.58.24. The women's 1500m was won impressively by Rachael Nathan with a very strong final lap taking her across the line in 4.30.6. A further winning Wellington performance came in the women's pole vault with Hayley Fox registering a good clearance of 2.50m. Adey White was in good form in the men's pole vault and cleared 3.40m for 2nd place. The club's distance runners coped well with the hot conditions and Ronnie McWilliams was 3rd in the 10000m in 33.57.84. Simon Bell picked up 4th spot in the 5000m in 16.10.34 and Annette Bell rang strongly for 4th in the women's 3000m in 10.50.74. The promising Hayley Brylewski finished a good 3rd in the 400m hurdles in a personal best 67.06 and Malc Bramhall claimed 4th place in the men's event in 60.65.

Following on from her fine long jump performance Jenny Pacey was also 3rd in the shot with 11.16m, 4th in the high jump with 1.65m and 6th in the 100m hurdles. A good throw of 36.93m gave Lesley Bryant 2nd position in the discus. A hurried warm up did not prevent Rowena Harrison taking 3rd place in the 400m in 59.02 and a very determined effort from Sarah Coates saw her grab 3rd spot in the 800m in 2.23.85. In the women's sprints Nina Swaby came 5th in the 100m in 13.45 and Liz Ward was 7th in the 200m in 27.05. For the men's team Steve Blagdon placed 3rd in the 100m in 11.49 with Jim Ayuba 6th in the 200m in 24.27. Blagdon also picked up 5th place in the 400m in 51.47. A good performance in the field came from Steve Swaby with a personal best 6.02m for 5th place in the long jump and Phil Mackie produced a very creditable triple jump of 11.97m which also placed him 5th. Further useful points in the field came from Natalie Hill in the javelin, Danielle Bryant in the triple jump and Jason Hall in the men's javelin.

Two splendid Wellington women's relay performances brought an end to a pretty spectacular day for the club. The 4x100m squad of Pacey, Swaby, Ward and Harrison notched up a new club record of 50.03 and not to be out done the 4x400m team of Ward, Coates, Nathan and Harrison did likewise with a time of 4.03.88.
