London Grand Prix
Crystal Palace
8 August 2003

Lincoln Wellington athlete Rachael Nathan got a taste of top flight athletics when she mixed with a host of world class stars at the London Grand Prix meeting at Crystal Palace Stadium. Nathan was one of a dozen of the best young female endurance runners in the country selected by UK Athletics to contest a 3000 metre race which opened the programme on the star studded evening. In blistering heat it was not too surprising that the early pace was modest and after five laps most of the field were still well in contention with the Wellington runner having the leaders well covered. The taps were turned on with 800 metres to go and at the bell Nathan had moved to the shoulder of the leader. In the final lap burn up she was just outpaced but 3rd place at the line in 9.41.8 was a terrific performance and it was some way back to the 4th athlete who was the highly rated Emily Pidgeon from Gloucester AC. Nathan also took the scalp of Ruth Proctor from Norwich who recently represented Great Britain under 20's at the European Junior Championships in Finland. With two further seasons after this as a junior athlete the Wellington youngster should be able to look forward to plenty more success both on the track and over the country. She will only have two or three more races this summer and her winter target will be to make the Great Britain junior women's team for the European Cross Country Championships at Edinburgh in December.
