There was another top class Wellington performance from Rachael Nathan who won the silver medal in the Senior girls 3000m. She
tracked pre-race favourite Laura Kenney for most of the race but was just outpaced over the final 600m. She was a long way
clear of the 3rd athlete and after a late start to the season her time of 9.39.34 was a big step back to her best form. She
will represent Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the European Youth Olympics in Paris in two weeks time and this run
should have helped her back to peak fitness for that event.
In the 2000m steeplechase, Jason Hall had to contend with some very tough opposition. He was just unable to get to the
leading group but kept going well to finish 8th in 6.18.76. Lydia Chamberlin was the 4th Wellington athlete to compete at
the championships. She found some very hot competition in her heat of the intermediate girls 200m and finished in 8th place
in 27.12.

Sheffield
11-12 July 2003
A phenomenal performance by Lincoln Wellington athlete Tom Duffield has won him the gold medal in the junior boys 400m race at
the English Schools Track and field Championships at the Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield. A blistering start in his heat soon
had his rivals under pressure and despite a fierce headwind down the back straight he was clear at halfway. He never looked
likely to be caught and was able to ease down in the closing stages to cross the line in 52.75 - a new personal best by over
half a second and comfortably the fastest time of the three heats. He ran the first half of the final much more judiciously
and did not hit the front until after halfway. In the final 100metres there was only one in it and he burst clear to win by
almost a full second in a remarkable time of 51.08. He went into this meeting ranked joint eighth in his age group and
virtually unknown outside Lincolnshire. He has emerged someway clear in the number one spot in the rankings and will have
to defend his position when he contests the AAA's championships back at Don Valley in August.
