BAL Cup (Round 1)
Derby
31 May 2003

A series of fine performances from the combined Lincoln Wellington men's and women's teams gave the club a comprehensive victory in the first round of the British Athletics League Cup competition at Derby. In the women's field events Jenny Pacey notched a winning double with 5.37m in the long jump and 10.76m in the shot and she followed up with a personal best 15.6 seconds for the runner up spot in the 100 metres hurdles. Danielle Bryant won the high jump with 1.40m and was 3rd in the triple jump and 4th in the javelin. And a splendid throw of 35.72m won the discus for promising new member Amy Orrow. Other field points went to Hayley Fox with 2.12m for 2nd place in the pole vault and to Linda Ellis who was 5th in the hammer. On the track there were personal bests for Rowena Harrison who won the 400m in 57.6 and Sarah Coates who took the 800m in good style in 2.22.4. Another personal best went to Hayley Brylewski who was 2nd in the 400m hurdles in 69.5. Despite not feeling well Annette Bell did enough to win the 3000m in 12.02.4. Liz Ward was runner up in both sprints with 13.5 in the 100m and 27.5 in the 200m and Lucinda Pitcher also picked up good points with a 2nd placing in the 1500m in 5.02.4. Both of the relays resulted in Wellington victories with a pretty useful 4x400m squad scoring in 4.13.9 and the 4x100m team crossing the line in 51.8.

Steve Blagdon was the outstanding performer for the men's team with wins in the 200m in 22.4 and the 400m in 51.5. An excellent throw of 49.19m won the hammer competition for Nigel Winchcombe and he was also 2nd in the discus with 37.85m. Youngster Danny Roome made his senior debut in the 1500m and produced the goods with a winning personal best time of 4.17.5. And a further track win went to Simon Bell with 16.13.1 in the 5000m. There were good 2nd places for Jason Hall in the 3000m steeplechase in 10.24.5, for Nick Marsh in the 10000m in 37.26.0 and for Malc Bramhall with a good time of 60.5 in the 400m hurdles. Geoff Powley picked up useful 3rd places in the 110m hurdles in 19.0 and the javelin with 43.65m and Steve Swaby was kept busy with 2nd spot in the high jump (1.60m), 3rd in the triple jump (11.45m) and 4th in the long jump (5.81m). A good clearance of 3.40m gave Adrian White 2nd place in the pole vault and he was also 4th in the shot with 9.76m. Will Strangeway recorded a personal best 2.07.1 for 4th place in the 800m and Jimoh Ayuba returned to action with 4th spot in the 100m in 11.8.

Several of the club's big names were not in action in this match but if a full strength squad is turned out for the semi final at Derby on July 19th there is a realistic chance of Wellington making the final of the competition for the first time in the club's history.
