Lincs T&F County Champs (Day 2)
Grantham
11 May 2003

Two superb runs by Lincoln Wellington's Matt Bowser on the second day of the County Championships provided ample evidence that the club's top middle distance performer is starting the season in terrific shape. After blitzing round the 800m in 1.54.3 for a comfortable win from Richard Blagrove, who also ran well for 2nd place in 1.56.9, Bowser then made all the running in the 5000m to score impressively in 14.44.6 - a new championship best performance and Wellington senior record. Other senior winners were Steve Swaby with 11.27m in the triple jump and Steve Blagdon who took the 200m title in 23.2 with Ricky Lea 2nd in 24.5. Garry Winchcombe picked up 2nd spot in the hammer with 38.15m but father Nigel went one better by winning the veterans event with 48.87m and completed a double with 37.60m in the discus. Another veteran win went to Geoff Powley with 2.17.2 in the 800m and he also scored in the 110 hurdles in 19.1. Danny Roome notched up his second title of the championship by winning the U17 mens 800m in good style in a personal best 2.07.2. Mark Plaskett also recorded a good personal best with 2.11.3 for 2nd place and Sam Delaney finished 5th in 2.17.8. The U17s 3000m went to Ian Kimpton in 9.43.7 with Josh Stone taking 3rd place in 9.59.8. In the U15s 3000m James Dray ran with some promise to win in 10.17.5 and Tom Duffield again underlined his potential when coming home unchallenged in the 800m in 2.06.7 - his second English Schools qualifying time of the championships. Ollie Bartlett was 2nd in the 800m in 2.18.8 with Ashley Smith 4th in 2.23.0. Jake Coyle won a thrilling U13 boys 800m in 2.29.9 with Dan Cocking 3rd in 2.39.9 and Jon Humberstone 4th in 2.48.0.

U17 Lydia Chamberlin completed a remarkable 2nd day of the championships by winning four titles. She took the 80m hurdles in 12.6, the long jump with 5.19m, 200m in 27.3 and the high jump with 1.48m. Natasha Johnson was runner up in the 3000m in 11.37.5 with Sarah Kimpton in 3rd spot. Josina Clarke was a good winner of the U15s 800m in 2.31.3 with a posse of Wellington athletes chasing her home. Rachel Humberstone was 2nd in 2.32.0, Kelly Gilbert 5th in 2.41.3 and Rebecca Jackson and Helen Penistan were a little further back in 6th and 8th . Lucinda Pitcher completed her 2nd victory of the weekend when taking the U20s 3000m in good style in a personal best 10.58.0 and in the same age group Alice Thomas won the 800m in 2.38.4, Danielle Bryant was 2nd in the long jump with 4.76m, and Natalie Hill won the javelin with 30.92m. Rowena Harrison won the senior 200m in 27.0 with Nina Swaby 3rd in 29.3 and Jenny Pacey leapt 5.61m to easily win the long jump. The veterans 800m went to Kathy Warhurst in 2.41.0 and the long jump was won by Denise Timmis with 4.77m. A good effort by Dot Fraser gave her 2nd place in the 200m in 36.0.

A good Wellington turnout in the U13s 800m saw Lara Thomas fare best with 3rd place in 2.38.7. Paige Stanney crossed the line 4th with Charlotte Gray 5th, Charlotte Hanson 6th and Chelsea Coyle 8th. Charlotte Gray and Alex Caskie both cleared 1.15m for 2nd and 3rd places in the high jump.
